Napoleon Vector 74 linear gas fireplace in a bright living room with a wood ceiling and tall windows

Napoleon Linear Gas Fireplaces Compared: Ascent Linear vs Vector vs Luxuria

Napoleon makes six families of linear gas fireplaces: the Ascent Linear, Ascent Linear Premium, Vector, Tall Vector, Luxuria and Tall Bay Luxuria. They run from $3,149 for a 36-inch Ascent Linear to $19,479 for a 74-inch Tall Vector see-through with Luminous Logs. This guide puts all six side by side, with every size and price we carry, so you can see what each step up buys.

The short answer

The Ascent Linear and Ascent Linear Premium are Napoleon's value linears: single-sided, from 36 to 76 inches, with smaller fireboxes and lower prices. The Vector is the step up: a bigger, hotter fire with LED lighting and a remote, wall switch and app control included, in single-sided or see-through. The Tall Vector is a Vector with a flame window about 8 inches taller, and it is the one to get if you want Luminous Logs in a single-sided or see-through fireplace. The Luxuria is the top of the line: the same sizes as the Vector, with Dynamic Heat Control and a triple-pane Glass Guard barrier included. The Tall Bay Luxuria is a three-sided version for a bay, a corner or a room divider.

The size number does not mean the same thing

Before you compare a 50 to a 46, know that Napoleon numbers the two platforms differently. On the Ascent Linear and Premium, the number is the width of the fireplace: an Ascent Linear 46 is 46 inches wide and frames into a 47-3/8" opening. On the Vector, Tall Vector and Luxuria, the number is closer to the width of the glass, and the box is about 15 inches wider. A Vector 50 is 65-5/16" wide and needs a 65-13/16" framed opening, which is wider than a 56-inch Ascent Linear.

Minimum framing widths from the product pages:

  • Ascent Linear and Premium: 36-1/2" (36), 42-1/2" (42), 47-3/8" (46), 56-1/2" (56) and 76-1/2" (76)
  • Vector and Tall Vector: 53-13/16" (38), 65-13/16" (50), 77-13/16" (62) and 89-13/16" (74)
  • Tall Bay Luxuria: 56-9/16" (50) and 68-9/16" (62)

The Vector, Tall Vector and Luxuria also list a minimum enclosure or ceiling height, measured from the bottom of the fireplace: 73" for the 38 and 50 sizes and 91" for the 62 and 74. Check the installation manual for your exact model before you frame.

Ascent Linear: the value linear

The Ascent Linear is the least expensive way into a Napoleon linear, and it is the only family here that comes with its burning media in the box: a Topaz CRYSTALINE glass ember bed. It is also the only one made in a 36-inch size.

  • Sizes 36, 42, 46, 56 and 76, from $3,149 to $5,149
  • 17,500 to 32,000 BTU/hr, with the Divinity flame pattern
  • Electronic ignition with high/low flame adjustment; a remote, eFIRE app controller and blower are optional
  • Natural gas or propane
  • Non-combustible cement board included, no hearth extension required, and Outdoor Room Certified
  • Top venting at 4" exhaust and 7" intake on the 36, 42 and 46; 5" by 8", reducible to 4" by 7", on the 56 and 76

Optional logs, Beach Fire, Shore Fire, Woodland and mineral rock kits let you change the look later.

Ascent Linear Premium: the same fire, fully equipped

The Premium is an Ascent Linear with the extras installed. At 42, 46 and 56 inches it has the same input and framing as the standard model, and it adds a blower, top lights, a full-function remote with eFIRE app control, an upgraded premium safety barrier and an adjustable finishing flange. It ships without media, so a log set or glass is required.

It runs $550 to $600 more than the standard at 42 to 56 inches and $1,150 more at 76. We break down whether the extras are worth it in Napoleon Ascent Linear vs Ascent Linear Premium.

Vector: the step up in fire and features

The Vector is where Napoleon's linears get bigger. A Vector 50 is rated at 36,000 BTU/hr, compared with 28,000 for a 56-inch Ascent Linear, and its 18-5/8" tall flame window is about 2 inches taller than the Ascent's. It is also the first family that comes in see-through.

More comes in the box, too:

  • ProFlame II remote, wall switch and eFIRE Bluetooth controller, with battery back-up
  • Multi-colored LED lights under the ember bed and the NIGHT LIGHT system, which glow with the fire off
  • MIRRO-FLAME porcelain reflective panels
  • A black premium safety barrier over heat-radiating ceramic glass

Burning media is required and sold separately: High Definition oak, driftwood or birch logs, glass embers or beads, or the Beach Fire log set. The 38 takes glass or Beach Fire only. Heat management is optional, with Dynamic Heat Control, Dynamic Heat Control Plus, Ducted Heat Management or a Hot Air Distribution kit.

Tall Vector: more flame height, and Luminous Logs

The Tall Vector takes the Vector's 50, 62 and 74 sizes and raises the flame window to 26-13/16", about 8 inches taller than the standard Vector. It has the same framing widths as the Vector, with a 48-3/16" framing height, and it can be vented up to 20 feet horizontally or 40 feet vertically. A ProFlame II remote and eFIRE controller are included.

Each Tall Vector comes in two versions:

  • Standard: a tube-style burner with a log set or glass media of your choice, sold separately.
  • Luminous Logs: a second burner that sends flame up from the logs themselves, above a modulating electric ember bed, with top accent lighting. Split flow lets you turn the Luminous Logs burner on or off from the remote. A Luminous Log Burner Kit in driftwood, oak or birch is required, from $759.

Luminous Logs add about $4,600 to the price of a single-sided Tall Vector and about $4,450 to a see-through.

Luxuria: Napoleon's top linear

The Luxuria shares the Vector's 50, 62 and 74 sizes, single-sided or see-through, along with its 18-5/8" flame height, LED and NIGHT LIGHT lighting, porcelain panels and full set of controls. Three things set it apart:

  1. Dynamic Heat Control is included. It moves heat away from the wall above the fireplace without fans, ducts or extra wiring, which in most installations allows a TV, sound bar or artwork above it.
  2. A triple-pane Glass Guard barrier system is included, designed to reduce the risk of burns.
  3. A little more fire. Each Luxuria is rated 2,000 BTU/hr higher than the Vector of the same size, and its glass is about 1-3/8" wider.

The Luxuria is approved for bedroom, bathroom and bed-sitting room installations and certified for mobile homes. Napoleon also makes an Indoor/Outdoor Conversion Kit for the Luxuria 50, 62 and 74 ($3,429 to $4,009), which lets a Luxuria sit in an exterior wall and be enjoyed from inside and outside the house.

Tall Bay Luxuria: three sides of glass

The Tall Bay Luxuria is a different shape from the rest. The same fireplace installs as a three-sided bay, in a corner with the optional Corner Installation Kit, or as a single-sided unit. Behind 21" tall double-pane glass, heat-radiating ceramic inside with a Low-E glass guard, it burns Luminous Logs over a modulating electric ember bed.

Dynamic Heat Control Linear is included, no power vent or outside air kit is required, and a Luminous Log Burner Kit is required and sold separately. The minimum enclosure or ceiling height is 88" for the 50 and 93" for the 62.

Vector vs Luxuria: is the upgrade worth it?

This is the question we hear most. Size for size, a Luxuria costs about $4,600 more than a Vector at 50 and 62 inches, and about $5,700 more at 74. What that buys is Dynamic Heat Control already installed, the triple-pane Glass Guard barrier, 2,000 BTU/hr more input and slightly wider glass.

If the main reason you are looking at the Luxuria is a TV above the fireplace, price the Vector with heat management first. Napoleon's Dynamic Heat Control Linear kit is an option on the Vector, at $179 to $398 depending on size and whether it is single-sided or see-through. Choose the Luxuria when you want the Glass Guard barrier, the Indoor/Outdoor kit, or the top model with everything included.

A TV above the fireplace

Every family here can be set up for a TV or artwork above it, in different ways:

  • Luxuria and Tall Bay Luxuria: Dynamic Heat Control included.
  • Vector and Tall Vector: Dynamic Heat Control, Dynamic Heat Control Plus, Ducted Heat Management or a Hot Air Distribution kit, all optional.
  • Ascent Linear and Premium: Universal Heat Management or a Hot Air Distribution kit on sizes up to 56 inches; Ducted Heat Management on the 76.

How each system works, and which one fits your wall, is covered in our guide to fireplace heat management systems. Always follow the clearances in the installation manual.

See-through and multi-sided options

The Ascent Linear and Premium are single-sided only. For a see-through linear, choose the Vector (38 to 74), the Tall Vector (50 to 74, with or without Luminous Logs) or the Luxuria (50 to 74). For three sides of glass, the Tall Bay Luxuria is the linear option. If you want a smaller multi-sided fireplace and do not need the linear look, Napoleon's Ascent Multi-View comes as a see-through or a three-sided peninsula from $5,759. Our see-through fireplace guide covers planning a two- or three-sided install.

So which Napoleon linear should you buy?

Ascent Linear if you want the lowest price, a 36- to 46-inch fireplace, propane from the factory, or a fireplace you can light the day it is installed with the glass ember bed it comes with.

Ascent Linear Premium if you like the Ascent's size and price but want the blower, top lights and remote without adding them one at a time.

Vector if you want a bigger, hotter fire, LED lighting and full controls included, or a see-through for less than a Luxuria.

Tall Vector if you want the fire to fill more of the wall, or you want Luminous Logs in a single-sided or see-through linear.

Luxuria if you want Napoleon's best linear, with Dynamic Heat Control and the Glass Guard barrier included, or you are planning an indoor/outdoor install.

Tall Bay Luxuria if the fireplace will be seen from three sides or set in a corner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Napoleon Vector and Luxuria?

They share the same 50, 62 and 74 sizes, the same 18-5/8" flame height and the same lighting and controls, and both come in single-sided and see-through. The Luxuria adds Dynamic Heat Control and a triple-pane Glass Guard barrier as standard, is rated 2,000 BTU/hr higher, and costs about $4,600 to $5,700 more. The Vector is also made in a 38-inch size.

What is the difference between the Vector and the Tall Vector?

The Tall Vector's flame window is 26-13/16" tall, about 8 inches taller than the Vector's 18-5/8", and the Tall Vector is the only Vector offered with Luminous Logs. The Tall Vector comes in 50, 62 and 74 inches; the Vector also comes in 38.

Which Napoleon linear fireplaces come with logs or media?

Only the Ascent Linear, which includes a Topaz CRYSTALINE glass ember bed. The Ascent Linear Premium, Vector, Tall Vector and Luxuria require a log set, glass or Beach Fire media, sold separately. The Tall Vector with Luminous Logs and the Tall Bay Luxuria require a Luminous Log Burner Kit.

Which Napoleon linear gas fireplace puts out the most heat?

The Luxuria 74, single-sided or see-through, at 50,000 BTU/hr. The Vector 74 and Tall Vector 74 are rated at 48,000.

Can these fireplaces run on propane?

Yes. The Ascent Linear is sold in natural gas and propane versions, and Napoleon makes a natural gas to propane conversion kit for each of the other families. Several of them note that a propane installation requires rigid vent or power vent, so check the manual for your model.

Are the Ascent Linear and Vector the same size?

No. The Ascent Linear's size is its overall width, while the Vector's is closer to its glass width. A Vector 50 needs a 65-13/16" wide framed opening, wider than the 56-1/2" opening for a 56-inch Ascent Linear.
