Napoleon Ascent vs Ascent X vs Altitude X vs Elevation X

Napoleon builds four traditional direct vent gas fireplaces that people constantly confuse: the Ascent, the Ascent X, the Altitude X and the Elevation X. Napoleon positions them as a ladder — Ascent good, Altitude X better, Elevation X best — with the Ascent X sitting on the rung between the first two.

That ladder is accurate about heat and features. It is quiet about the thing that actually decides most projects, which is that two of these four are the same size appliance and two of them are not. Every figure below comes from the specifications published on our own product pages for these models.

Heat, remote and blower at a glance

Output climbs cleanly across the four at both sizes. The other clean dividing line is the X badge: every X series model includes a remote and a blower as standard, and the Ascent does not.

That remote and blower line is worth pausing on. On the Ascent you are pre-wired for a wall switch, and a back-up control system keeps the fireplace working in an outage. Step up to any X model and you get both a remote and a heat-circulating blower in the box. A fireplace without a blower still radiates heat perfectly well — it simply does not push it out into the room.

Notice too that the gap between the two X models at the top widens with size. At 36 inches the Altitude X and Elevation X are within 500 BTU of each other. At 42 inches the Elevation X pulls 7,000 BTU ahead.

The Ascent and the Ascent X are the same box

This is the finding that should shape your decision, and no ladder diagram tells you.

At 42 inches the two are identical: the same cabinet at 34-5/8" high, 42" wide and 18-5/16" deep, and the same viewing area of 37-11/16" by 23-11/16". Same hole in the wall, same window, same flame footprint. At 36 inches they are within an inch of each other — same 35" width and 15-3/4" depth, with the Ascent X standing one inch taller.

So the step from Ascent to Ascent X is not buying you a bigger fireplace. It is buying you more heat and a better-equipped one: the blower and remote above, plus a premium safety screen, a NIGHT LIGHT and heat-radiating ceramic glass, and a much longer options list including seven firebox liners, four burning displays, four fronts, a power vent for awkward runs and a heat management kit for reduced clearances.

The practical consequence is useful. If your wall is already framed to an Ascent, you can change your mind and go to the Ascent X without rebuilding it. You cannot do that with the two above.

Where the fireplace actually gets bigger

The Altitude X and the Elevation X are different appliances, not better-equipped versions of the same one. Both are considerably taller, and the glass grows dramatically.

Read the height column of the viewing area again. The Ascent pair show a window just under 24 inches tall. The Altitude X shows 36 inches and the Elevation X 37-1/8". That is more than a foot of extra glass height, and in a room it is not a subtle difference — it is the difference between a fireplace you notice and a fireplace the room is built around. The same pattern holds at 36 inches, where the Ascent pair show a window around 23-5/8" tall against 33" for both X models above them.

Two things follow. First, the number in the name does not mean the same thing across the range: an "Ascent 42" shows a 37-11/16" wide window, while an "Altitude X 42" shows 42-1/4". Second, the Elevation X is 22 inches deep against 18-5/16" for the Ascents. On a 2x6 wall that extra depth is a real framing decision, so settle the model before the studs go up.

The controls tier as much as the flame

How you operate the fireplace separates these four as clearly as the heat does.

The Ascent is pre-wired for a wall switch and has a back-up control system, so it runs when the power is out. The Ascent X adds its included remote, offered as on/off or on/off with a thermostat, and can be operated in an emergency from a USB power bank.

The Altitude X moves to the eFIRE app, which brings flame height, thermostat control and the NIGHT LIGHT onto your phone, with its standard blower under variable speed and thermostatic control. The Elevation X ships with both a physical remote and the app, and adds flame modulation, blower speed, split-flow control and ember bed lighting.

The ember bed is the Elevation X's real trick

Every model here has a glowing ember bed of some kind, but they are not the same thing. On the Ascent and Ascent X it is a passive glowing bed beneath the PHAZER log set. On the Altitude X you can add AMBIENT-GLOW metal fibers as an option.

The Elevation X uses ENDLESS EMBERS, an electric ember bed that modulates independently of the flame and fills the firebox floor beneath the logs, visible from every angle. The ember glow can be run up or down, or left glowing on its own, which is what produces the settled, just-burned-down look a gas fire usually cannot manage. Combined with three Ultra-HD log sets, ten decorative brick kits and a choice of log or glass burner, it is the single feature that most justifies the top of the range.

The Elevation X also offers Dynamic Heat Control PLUS as an option, which redirects warmth to designated areas of the home and continues to operate during a power outage — worth knowing if you are buying the fireplace partly as backup heat.

So which one

Choose the Ascent if this is a secondary room, a rental or a spec build, the fireplace is there for atmosphere rather than heat, and you are happy running it from a wall switch. It is a genuine direct vent fireplace with a proper flame, and its shallow depth suits tight walls. Ascent 36 · Ascent 42

Choose the Ascent X if you like the Ascent's proportions and want it to work harder — meaningfully more heat, with the blower and remote included and a long options list for fronts and liners. Also the right answer if the wall is already framed for an Ascent and you want to upgrade late. Ascent X 36 · Ascent X 42

Choose the Altitude X if you want the fireplace to be the focal point of the room. The window is over a foot taller than the Ascent's, the output is roughly double, and the eFIRE app makes it pleasant to live with. For most people building a feature wall, this is the sweet spot of the range. Altitude X 36 · Altitude X 42

Choose the Elevation X if the room is large, the fireplace is the centrepiece and you want the ENDLESS EMBERS bed and full app control. At 42 inches it is also comfortably the most powerful of the four. Budget for the depth: at 22 inches it needs more wall than anything else here. Elevation X 36 · Elevation X 42
