Napoleon Ascent Linear Premium 56 gas fireplace in a white tile wall under a TV and wood mantel

Napoleon Ascent Linear vs Ascent Linear Premium

Napoleon's Ascent Linear and Ascent Linear Premium put out the same heat at 42, 46 and 56 inches. The Premium costs $550 to $600 more at those sizes and arrives with a blower, top lights, a full-function remote and an upgraded safety barrier already on it. The standard Ascent Linear includes its glass ember bed and comes in a 36-inch size the Premium skips.

The difference in one paragraph

The Ascent Linear (model code BL) is the base fireplace. You get the firebox, a Topaz CRYSTALINE ember bed and an electronic ignition system that is pre-wired for a wall switch, and you add a remote or a blower if you want them. The Ascent Linear Premium (model code BLX) ships with the blower, top lights, full-function remote and eFIRE app control installed, and you choose the logs or glass that go inside it.

Both are direct vent linear gas fireplaces from the same Napoleon family, and both carry the President's Lifetime Limited Warranty.

The Premium is the same heat in the same hole in the wall

Size for size, the two lines are rated the same. A 42 is 20,000 BTU/hr in either line, a 46 is 24,000 and a 56 is 28,000. Buying the Premium does not buy a hotter fireplace.

The framing matches too. The Ascent Linear 42 and the Ascent Linear Premium 42 both call for a minimum opening 42-1/2" wide, 39-3/8" high and 18-9/16" deep, with a 4" exhaust and 7" intake off the top. At that size, an opening framed for one fits the other.

The rest of the shared list is long:

  • Direct vent with electronic ignition and battery back-up
  • No hearth extension required
  • Optional MIRRO-FLAME porcelain or Ledgestone panels
  • Optional heat management that lowers clearances for a TV or artwork above: Universal Heat Management on sizes up to 56 inches, Ducted Heat Management on the 76
  • Natural gas from the factory, with a propane conversion kit available

So the choice between them comes down to what is bolted on at the factory and what you plan to add yourself.

What the Premium includes that the standard leaves optional

Four things come on every Ascent Linear Premium that you would order separately, or go without, on the standard model.

  1. A blower. It pushes the firebox heat out into the room, and its speed is set from the remote.
  2. Top lights. Lights in the top of the firebox illuminate the logs or glass, so the fireplace has a presence when the flame is low or off.
  3. A full-function remote and eFIRE app control. One handheld, or your phone, runs on/off, thermostat, flame height, blower speed and the top lights.
  4. An upgraded safety barrier and a finishing flange. The premium barrier gives a clearer view of the flame, and the adjustable flange takes finishes from 1/2" to 1" thick.

The standard Ascent Linear starts simpler. It is pre-wired for a wall switch, has a high/low flame adjustment on the unit, and takes an optional on/off remote, thermostatic remote, eFIRE controller or blower kit when you want one.

The media works the opposite way

The standard Ascent Linear comes with its Topaz CRYSTALINE ember bed in the box. You can light it the day it is installed and never buy another accessory. On the 42, 46, 56 and 76 you can also add birch, driftwood or split oak logs, a Beach Fire log set, or Shore Fire, Woodland and Mineral Rock kits.

The Premium ships with no media, and one choice is required: birch, driftwood or oak logs, a Beach Fire log set, glass beads or glass embers. Napoleon recommends a log set plus glass or an enhancement kit. At Dreamwood Living, glass media kits start at $105 and log sets start at $249, so budget for that on top of the Premium's price.

What the price gap buys

Prices at Dreamwood Living as of October 2026:

Size Ascent Linear Ascent Linear Premium Difference
36" $3,149 Not made
42" $3,499 $4,099 $600
46" $3,839 $4,409 $570
56" $4,179 $4,729 $550
76" $5,149 $6,299 $1,150

The gap looks different once you price the standard model the way most people end up running it. Take the 42:

That is $38 more than a Premium 42 before media, and it still has no top lights, no upgraded barrier and no eFIRE app control. Add the least expensive glass kit to the Premium and it lands at $4,204, or $67 more than the built-up standard model.

If you want a blower and a remote, the Premium is the better buy. If you want flames on glass run from a wall switch, the standard Ascent Linear saves you the full $600 and already includes the glass.

So which one

Buy the Ascent Linear if:

  • You need a 36-inch fireplace. The Premium starts at 42.
  • The fireplace is mostly for looks and will run from a wall switch.
  • You like the topaz glass ember bed and don't plan to add logs.
  • You are fitting out several rooms or units and the $550 to $600 per fireplace matters.

Buy the Ascent Linear Premium if:

  • You want the blower. Bought separately it closes most of the price gap on its own.
  • You want to set flame height, blower speed and lights from a remote or your phone.
  • You want a log set. You are buying media either way, and the top lights are there to show it off.
  • The fireplace is the focal point of a main living space and will be looked at with the flame off as often as on.

At 76 inches the gap widens to $1,150, so price out the blower and controls you would add to the Ascent Linear 76 before choosing the Premium 76.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ascent Linear Premium hotter than the Ascent Linear?

No. At 42, 46 and 56 inches both lines are rated at the same maximum input: 20,000, 24,000 and 28,000 BTU/hr. The Premium's included blower moves more of that heat into the room, and the same result is available on the standard model with an optional blower kit.

Does the Napoleon Ascent Linear come with a remote?

No. The standard Ascent Linear is pre-wired for a wall switch and has a high/low flame adjustment on the unit. An on/off remote, a thermostatic remote and the eFIRE Bluetooth controller are optional. The Ascent Linear Premium includes a full-function remote and eFIRE app control.

Do I have to buy logs for the Ascent Linear Premium?

You have to buy one media choice, and it can be logs or glass. The Premium ships without media and requires birch, driftwood or oak logs, a Beach Fire log set, glass beads or glass embers. The standard Ascent Linear includes a Topaz CRYSTALINE glass ember bed.

Can I mount a TV above an Ascent Linear or Ascent Linear Premium?

Both lines accept Napoleon's optional heat management systems, which redirect warm air away from the wall above the fireplace and reduce clearances to combustibles. Sizes up to 56 inches use Universal Heat Management and the 76 uses Ducted Heat Management. Follow the installation manual for the exact clearances.

What is the difference between BL, BLP and BLX model numbers?

BL is the standard Ascent Linear, as in BL42NTE. BLX is the current Ascent Linear Premium, as in BLX42NTE. BLP is the earlier Premium model code, which you will still see on older listings and on accessory part numbers such as the BLKBLP42 birch log set.

Will a Premium fit an opening framed for a standard Ascent Linear?

At 42 inches both models list the same minimum framing: 42-1/2" wide, 39-3/8" high and 18-9/16" deep, with the same 4"/7" top vent. Check the installation manual for your size before you frame or order, and allow for the thickness of your finishing material.
