Direct vent or vent-free
| Direct vent | Vent-free | |
|---|---|---|
| Air for the fire | Outside air, through the vent pipe; the firebox is sealed from the room | Room air; most models have an oxygen depletion sensor (ODS) pilot that shuts the burner off if oxygen gets low |
| Venting | A vent pipe out through a wall or up through the roof | None, no chimney or vent pipe |
| Room size | No combustion air needed from the room | Enough open space for the input; Empire calls for 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr |
| Bedrooms | The Empire Spirit, Kingsman and True North direct vent stoves are approved for bedrooms | Not over 10,000 BTU/hr, and not at all in Massachusetts |
| Local codes | Installed to the manual and local code | Not allowed in some areas; check your local code before you buy |
| Max. input, the stoves we carry | 19,500 to 44,000 BTU/hr | Up to 40,000 BTU/hr |
| Brands | Napoleon, Empire, Kingsman, Breckwell, True North | Empire, Buck Stove, Kingsman, Breckwell |
Our guide to direct vent vs. vent-free gas covers the same choice for fireplaces, including where vent-free isn't allowed.

Sizes are width x height x depth. The direct vent and vent-free pages have more detail on each stove, and every product page has the manual.
Ignition and power outages
- Millivolt (standing pilot) stoves need no electricity to run, so the fire keeps working in a power outage. Most Kingsman, Buck Stove and Empire stoves and several Napoleon stoves come in millivolt.
- Electronic or intermittent pilot (IPI) stoves light the pilot only when needed. The Empire Spirit IPI models run on an AC adapter with a battery backup.
- Blowers need power. The Napoleon Haliburton and Havelock, the Breckwell BH23 and the Buck Stove Model 34 and Model 384 come with one; most others offer one as an option.
Our guide to millivolt vs. electronic ignition explains the difference in more detail.
What else to order
- Several stoves are sold as the stove body: the Kingsman stoves need their log set, and some also need doors, a door frame, a safety barrier or a burner; the Napoleon Elora needs a Luminous Log burner kit. Each product page lists what's required.
- Direct vent stoves need vent pipe and a termination; the product page or manual lists the approved vent systems.
- The Buck Stove Model 34 can take a mantel or trim kit, and the Model 384 legs or a pedestal, sold separately.
- For the Empire Spirit cast iron stoves: the side shelf kit fits the VFD10CC, VFD20CC, VFD30CC, DVP20CC and DVP30CC, and a black porcelain liner fits the DVP30CC.
Gas stove FAQs
Do I need a chimney for a gas stove?
No. A direct vent stove vents through its own pipe, out a wall or up through the roof. A vent-free stove needs no vent at all.
Will a gas stove work in a power outage?
A millivolt stove will, since it needs no electricity. Electronic ignition stoves depend on their battery backup, and a blower waits until the power is back.
Natural gas or propane?
Most stoves come in both, or convert with a kit. Napoleon stoves ship for natural gas with a propane conversion kit for most models (the Elora is natural gas only). The Empire vent-free stoves and the Buck Stove Model 1127 can't be converted and the Model 1110 is also made for one gas, so order the model for your gas.
Can a gas stove go in a bedroom?
Many direct vent stoves can: the Empire Spirit, Kingsman and True North direct vent stoves are approved for bedrooms. A vent-free heater over 10,000 BTU/hr can't go in a bedroom or bathroom.
Can a gas stove go in a mobile home?
Many can, including the Napoleon and Kingsman direct vent stoves. Each product page says whether that stove is approved.
