Wood burning fireplace in a bright living room with wood floors and a stone chimney breast

Wood Fireplaces

Wood burning fireplaces from Superior, Majestic, Valcourt, Osburn and Empire — factory-built units designed to be framed into a wall and vented with the manufacturer's own chimney system.

One thing to sort out before you browse: "wood burning fireplace" covers two genuinely different appliances, and they are not competing versions of the same thing. An open fireplace gives you an unobstructed fire behind a screen and very little heat. An EPA certified fireplace closes the firebox behind glass, controls the air, and actually warms the room. Decide which one you are buying first.

Choosing a wood burning fireplace

Open or EPA certified — settle this first

An open fireplace is built to be looked at. The firebox stays open behind a safety screen, heat is radiant only, and efficiency sits in the same low range as a traditional masonry hearth. It is the right choice when you want the sound and smell of a real open fire and your heating comes from elsewhere. An EPA certified fireplace is a different machine: glass doors, controlled combustion air, secondary burn, and efficiency in the region of 70 to 80%, which means it heats the room and holds a fire much longer on the same wood. Neither is better in the abstract. They answer different questions, and the price difference between them reflects that.

Factory-built is not the same as masonry

Nearly everything here is a factory-built fireplace, sometimes called zero clearance or prefab. It is a tested, listed assembly — firebox, chimney and components engineered and certified together — which is what lets it sit against framing at specified clearances instead of needing a mason. That also means you cannot mix and match: the fireplace is listed with a particular chimney system and only that system may be used. A masonry fireplace is built on site from brick and block on its own foundation, costs a great deal more, and takes months rather than days.

The chimney is usually the biggest line on the quote

People budget for the fireplace and forget the flue. A factory-built wood fireplace needs the manufacturer's own listed insulated chimney running from the appliance up through the structure and out above the roof, plus the firestops, the attic insulation shield, the roof flashing, the storm collar and the cap. On a two-storey house that stack routinely costs as much as the fireplace, sometimes more. Price the appliance, the chimney components and the labour as one number before you compare anything.

Radiant or heat-circulating

Several models here are offered both ways and it is worth understanding the difference. A radiant fireplace throws heat straight out of the opening into the room — simple, nothing to fail, and the heat is very directional. A heat-circulating model wraps the firebox in air channels, drawing room air in at the bottom, warming it against the firebox and returning it through upper grilles, often with a blower. Circulating models spread heat far more evenly through a space and are the better choice in a larger or more open room; radiant models suit a smaller space where you sit near the fire.

Louvered or flush faces

The face changes the look as much as the surround does. A louvered fireplace has visible grilles above and below the opening, which is how a heat-circulating unit moves air, and it reads as traditional. A flush or radiant face has no grilles and sits cleaner against a tiled or stone wall, which suits a more contemporary surround. Some model families are sold in both configurations under closely related model numbers, so check the suffix carefully when ordering — the difference is easy to miss and impossible to change afterwards.

Outside air matters more than it used to

A wood fire consumes a great deal of air, and a modern well-sealed house does not have it to spare. Without a dedicated supply the fireplace competes with bath fans, range hoods and the furnace, which shows up as smoke rolling into the room, a fire that will not draw, or a chimney that backdrafts when an extractor runs. An outside air kit brings combustion air directly from outdoors to the firebox. Many jurisdictions require one, and in a tight or newer house you want it regardless.

Plan the framing, the hearth and the clearances together

Every model publishes a framing opening, clearances to combustible material at the sides, top and rear, a required hearth extension in front, and rules on how close a mantel or shelf may sit above the opening. These are not guidelines; they are the terms of the listing, and an inspector will check them. Depth is the one most often underestimated, since a wood firebox is considerably deeper than a gas one. Pull the installation manual for the exact model before the framing goes up.

Check what your area allows before you order

Some regions restrict or prohibit new wood-burning appliances, and others permit only EPA certified units or require a change-out when a property is sold. Air-quality management districts in particular have their own rules, and they differ from the state code around them. A quick call to the local building department before ordering is far cheaper than discovering the restriction after delivery.

Wood burning fireplace FAQs

What is a zero clearance wood burning fireplace?

It is a factory-built fireplace tested and listed as a complete assembly, so it can be installed at specified close clearances to framing rather than requiring masonry construction. The firebox is insulated and jacketed, and it vents through the manufacturer's own listed chimney system. It is what makes it possible to add a genuine wood fire to an ordinary framed wall, and it is what nearly every wood fireplace sold today is.

Are wood burning fireplaces EPA certified?

Some are and some are not, and the difference is deliberate rather than a quality failing. Open decorative fireplaces are not certified appliances — they are built to show an open fire, not to heat efficiently. Closed EPA certified models control combustion air behind glass and reach far higher efficiency. Check the individual model, because both kinds are sold under the same category name and they behave nothing alike.

Do wood burning fireplaces actually heat a room?

An EPA certified one does, comfortably. An open radiant fireplace largely does not — efficiency is in the region of 5 to 15%, the heat is radiant and directional, and a great deal of warm household air goes up the chimney while it burns. If you want the appearance of an open fire, that trade is fine and expected. If you want the fireplace to contribute heat, buy a certified closed model or look at a wood stove.

Can I use any chimney with a factory-built fireplace?

No, and this is one of the more expensive mistakes in the category. A factory-built fireplace is certified together with a specific chimney system, and substituting another manufacturer's pipe voids the listing, the warranty and usually the inspection. Order the chimney components specified in the model's manual. It also means the chimney cost is effectively fixed once you have chosen the fireplace.

How much does it cost to install a wood burning fireplace?

Far more than the appliance alone, because the chimney system is a substantial cost in its own right — on a two-storey house it frequently matches or exceeds the price of the fireplace. Add framing, the hearth extension, the surround finish and labour. The useful number is the installed total including the full chimney stack, and it is the only fair way to compare a wood fireplace against gas or electric.

What is the difference between a wood fireplace and a wood insert?

A wood fireplace is a complete appliance you frame into a wall and vent with a new chimney. An insert is built to slide into a masonry fireplace that already exists, using that chimney with a stainless liner. If you are building or opening up a wall, you want a fireplace. If you already have a masonry hearth you have stopped using, you want an insert, and it will cost considerably less to install.

Can a wood burning fireplace go on an interior wall?

Yes, provided the chimney has a clear vertical path up through the floors above and out through the roof, with the required clearances and firestops at every level. An interior chimney actually drafts better than an exterior one because it stays warmer. What decides it is not the wall but whether that vertical run is achievable — joists, rooms and roof structure above are what usually rule it out.
