Superior DRT6345 45" Traditional Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

The Superior DRT6345 is the 45" size of Superior's DRT6300 traditional direct vent gas fireplaces, built around a tall flame on a flush hearth floor. The gas controls are hidden to the side of the opening behind the smooth black face, which leaves a clean front to finish around, and the ceramic glass front is 41" wide and 34-1/2" tall.

It comes as the DRT6345TEN for natural gas, 60,000 Btu/hr high and 40,000 low, with six flame levels on the included remote; a conversion kit sets it up for propane. The electronic IPI/CPI ignition runs on 120 V, with four AA batteries in the receiver as backup in a power outage. It vents from the top in Superior's 8" DV Lock pipe, 8" inner and 11" outer. The power-vent version, the DRT6345TYN, has been discontinued.

Two items are required and ordered separately: the Oak log set and a firebox liner (black porcelain, or buff herringbone or buff rustic ceramic). Mission and Classic andirons are optional. The DRT6300 also comes in 40" (DRT6340), and the DRT63ST is the see-through model from the same family.

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances to combustibles: 1/2" at the back and sides, 0" at the spacers, the top spacers and the floor.
  • Ceiling: at least 69" from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling.
  • Header: a header can touch the top spacers but can't rest on them or be notched around them. All framing above the fireplace must support itself. Fit the header heat shield that ships taped to the top of the fireplace.
  • Front: keep 3 ft clear in front of the fireplace for service.
  • Side walls: if one side is flush with a wall, the wall on the other side can't extend past the front edge of the fireplace, and in a recess neither side wall can. A combustible side wall must be at least 14" from the opening, or 8-1/4" if it is a protected wall. Other combustible materials beside the opening must stay inside the 45 degree safe zone shown in the manual.
  • Mantel: a 12" deep combustible mantel needs to be at least 17" above the top of the fireplace and a 2" deep one at least 7", per the mantel chart in the manual. Non-combustible mantels can go at any height.
  • Wall finish: the face for 10-3/8" above the top of the fireplace must be non-combustible material or cement board; combustible materials can start above that. Never let combustible materials sit in front of or overlap the black front face. Non-combustible trim can go on the face as long as it doesn't cover the removable glass panel.
  • Shelf or TV above: with 2 ft of vertical vent and one 90° elbow, a combustible shelf must be at least 89-1/16" above the base of the fireplace, which includes the 3" clearance above the vent. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. A TV above must stay within its maker's temperature rating.
  • Logs and liner: the fireplace can't be run until the log set and a firebox liner are installed.
  • Floor: no hearth extension is required.
  • Venting: use only Superior 8" DV Lock pipe (8" inner, 11" outer), from the top of the fireplace. Straight vertical runs are 6 to 40 ft. Horizontal runs start with at least 2 ft of vertical vent off the top and can reach 20 ft, with 10 ft of vertical vent for a 20 ft run and 40 ft total, with up to three 90° elbows. The vent restrictor packed in the firebox is needed on some vent layouts; the vent tables in the manual show which. Keep 3" of clearance above horizontal vent runs and 1" at the sides and bottom. Use firestops wherever the vent passes through a combustible wall, floor or ceiling, and the insulation shield in attics or where blown or loose-fill insulation is used.
  • Gas: route the gas line to the right side of the fireplace. Inlet pressure must be 5.5" to 10.5" WC on natural gas or 11" to 13" WC on propane.
  • Power: connect 120 VAC to the fireplace's receptacle; the four AA batteries in the receiver are a backup for power outages. The remote's wall receiver mounts in a junction box (not included) on the wall next to the fireplace, within reach of its wiring harness.
  • Heat source: the DRT6300 is a decorative fireplace and can't be installed as the primary heat source in a home.
  • Altitude: the standard orifices cover 0 to 4,500 ft. Above that, the input has to be reduced; ask your gas supplier.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", and the shutoff must be a T-handle valve. A horizontal termination less than 7 ft above grade also needs a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector with battery backup on the floor where the fireplace is, and a GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW sign outside.
  • Manufactured homes: ground the fireplace to the chassis and don't cut or weaken the cross members. It must run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified conversion kit is used.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer following the installation manual and local codes. Superior calls for an inspection by a qualified service person before first use and once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the DRT6345 come with logs?
No. The Oak log set (LOG-OAK-MDLX4045) and one firebox liner are ordered separately, and the fireplace can't be run without both. The grate, glowing embers, platinum embers and volcanic stone come in the box.

Can it heat my home?
It puts out heat, and the remote's six flame levels change the flame height and the heat output, but it is listed as a decorative fireplace. It can't be installed as the primary heat source in a home.

Can I put a TV above it?
Yes, if the shelf or TV mount is at least 89-1/16" above the base of the fireplace with 2 ft of vertical vent and one 90° elbow, and the TV stays within its maker's temperature rating. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. Our guide to fireplace heat management explains other ways to keep the wall above cooler.

Will it work during a power outage?
Yes. Four AA batteries in the receiver run the ignition and burner when the power is out.

Can I change it from natural gas to propane, or the other way?
Yes. It ships for natural gas, and Superior's GCK-MDLX45NP kit converts it to propane (43,000 to 56,000 Btu/hr after conversion). GCK-MDLX45PN converts it back. Otherwise it may only run on the gas shown on its rating plate.

Is there a power vent version?
Not any more. The DRT6345TYN power-vent model has been discontinued. The DRT6345TEN vents with Superior's 8" DV Lock pipe, straight up as far as 40 ft or out through a wall with up to 20 ft of horizontal run.

Can it go in a bedroom?
Yes. The DRT6345 is listed for bedrooms and mobile homes, where local codes allow.
