The Superior Log-Oak-MDLX4045 is the seven-piece split oak log set for Superior's DRT6300 traditional direct-vent gas fireplaces, the 40" Superior DRT6340 and the 45" Superior DRT6345. Those fireplaces don't ship with logs, and this set is the one Superior specifies for both, so it's ordered with the fireplace.
The logs lock onto pins on the burner, on the grate and on each other, over a bed of volcanic stone and glowing embers that come with the fireplace. A firebox liner kit is the other required piece; it goes in before the logs.

Do I need this log set?
Yes. The DRT6340 and DRT6345 ship without logs, and Superior lists this set as required for both, along with one firebox liner kit. The fireplace can't be operated without them.
Does one set fit both sizes?
Yes. The same MDLX4045 set is specified for the 40" DRT6340 and the 45" DRT6345.
Are the embers and volcanic stone included?
They come with the fireplace, not the log set. Replacement glowing embers (FGE) and volcanic stone (FDVS) are sold separately; Superior suggests replacing the embers once a year for the best glow.
How should the embers look?
Fluffed, quarter-size pieces covering about three-quarters of the burner on natural gas. On propane, none go on the main ports. More isn't better: too much ember material causes soot and a poor flame.
How do I clean the logs?
Wait until they're cool, lift them out carefully (fiber logs get fragile once they've been fired) and clean off carbon with a vacuum or a soft brush, such as a paintbrush. Put each piece back exactly where the instructions show; logs out of position cause carbon build-up and change how the fireplace burns.
What if I see soot on the logs or glass?
Soot almost always means a flame is touching a log. Turn the fireplace off, let it cool, and check every piece against the placement instructions so nothing sits in the flames or over the burner ports. If it still soots with the logs in the right place, have a qualified service technician check the burner's air adjustment.
The log set is covered under Superior's 20 Year Limited Warranty on the Superior DRT6340 or DRT6345 it's installed in, which treats logs this way:
Wear and tear, misuse and faulty installation aren't covered, and Superior says using a log set that isn't approved for the fireplace voids the fireplace's warranty. The warranty is for the original owner of a fireplace installed in the US or Canada. Full terms are in the warranty certificate.
