Superior DRT63ST 40" Direct Vent See Through Gas Fireplace

The Superior DRT63ST is a 40" see-through direct vent gas fireplace from the DRT6300 family. It has ceramic glass on both faces, so one fire can show in two rooms, or in a room and a patio, screened porch or lanai. An aged oak high-density fiber log set sits on a heavy-duty grate, and each glass is 34-3/4" wide and 29-5/8" tall.

It comes as the DRT63STTEN-B for natural gas, 57,000 Btu/hr high and 37,000 low, and converts to propane with a kit that includes the burner. The included remote runs it on and off, sets six flame levels and holds a room temperature in thermostat mode. The electronic IPI/CPI ignition runs on 120 V, with four AA batteries in the receiver as backup. It vents from the top in Superior's 8" DV Lock pipe. The power-vent version, the DRT63STTYN-B, has been discontinued.

A firebox liner is required and ordered separately: buff rustic or buff herringbone ceramic, or black porcelain. For an indoor/outdoor installation, add one of the two outdoor window kits and put the control side indoors. For a single-sided fireplace from the same family, see the DRT6340 and DRT6345.

Framing

Depth (D) 26-3/8"

Framing is 2x4 or larger, on a 1/2" board platform. On the outdoor side, the base of the fireplace sits at least 6" above the deck, patio or lanai floor as a moisture barrier. The control side must face indoors.

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances to combustibles: 0" at the back and side spacers, the top spacers and the floor.
  • Ceiling: at least 72" from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling.
  • Header: a header can touch the top spacers but can't rest on them or be notched around them. All framing above the fireplace must support itself.
  • Front: keep 3 ft clear in front of the fireplace for service.
  • Side walls: if one side is flush with a wall, the wall on the other side can't extend past the front edge of the fireplace, and in a recess neither side wall can. A combustible side wall 14" or more from the opening can run any length; at 8-1/4" it can project no more than 12". Other combustible materials beside the opening must stay inside the 45 degree safe zone shown in the manual.
  • Mantel: a 12" deep combustible mantel needs to be at least 17" above the top of the fireplace and a 2" deep one at least 7", per the mantel chart in the manual. Non-combustible mantels can go at any height. Outdoor mantels and overhangs follow the outdoor kit instructions.
  • Wall finish: never let combustible materials sit in front of or overlap the black front faces. Non-combustible trim can go on the faces as long as it doesn't cover the removable glass panels.
  • Shelf or TV above: with 2 ft of vertical vent and one 90° elbow, a combustible shelf or enclosure must be at least 91-1/2" above the base of the fireplace. Keep 4" of clearance above horizontal vent pipe, and don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. A TV above must stay within its maker's temperature rating.
  • Liner: the fireplace can't be run until a firebox liner is installed.
  • Hearth: no hearth extension is required. Indoors, combustible hearth material must sit at or below the base of the fireplace; non-combustible material can sit higher and butt against the face. Outdoors, all hearth material must be at least 6" below the base.
  • Outdoor side: an indoor/outdoor installation needs one of the outdoor window kits, and the control side must be indoors.
  • Venting: use only Superior 8" DV Lock pipe (8" inner, 11" outer), from the top of the fireplace. Straight vertical runs are 6 to 60 ft. Horizontal runs start with at least 2 ft of vertical vent off the top and can reach 20 ft, with 10 ft of vertical vent for a 20 ft run and 40 ft total, with up to three 90° elbows. Every installation uses the vent restrictor that ships with the fireplace. Keep 1" of clearance around vertical vent pipe, and 4" above and 1" at the sides and bottom of horizontal runs. Use firestops wherever the vent passes through a combustible wall, floor or ceiling, and the insulation shield in attics or where blown or loose-fill insulation is used.
  • Gas: route the gas line to the right side of the fireplace. Inlet pressure must be 5" to 10.5" WC on natural gas or 11" to 13" WC on propane.
  • Power: a 3-wire 120 VAC, 60 Hz supply to the fireplace junction box is required; the receiver's four AA batteries are backup only.
  • Heat source: the DRT63ST is a supplemental heater, so the home should have another primary heat source.
  • Altitude: the standard orifices cover 0 to 4,500 ft. Above that, the input has to be reduced; ask your gas supplier.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", and the shutoff must be a T-handle valve. A horizontal termination less than 7 ft above grade also needs a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector with battery backup on the floor where the fireplace is, and a GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW sign outside.
  • Manufactured homes: ground the fireplace to the chassis and don't cut or weaken the cross members. It must run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified conversion kit is used.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer following the installation manual and local codes. Superior calls for an inspection by a qualified service person before first use and once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it go between a room and a patio?
Yes. Add one of the two outdoor window kits (light or dark tinted tempered glass, each with an outdoor barrier) to the outdoor side, and put the control side indoors. The outdoor side can face a patio, deck, screened porch or lanai. On the outdoor side, the base has to sit at least 6" above the floor, and outdoor hearth material at least 6" below the base.

Does it come with logs?
Yes. The aged oak high-density fiber log set, heavy-duty grate, platinum embers and volcanic stone come with it. The firebox liner is the one required item you order separately.

What does the remote do?
It turns the fireplace on and off, sets six flame levels, holds a room temperature in thermostat mode and switches the pilot between IPI and CPI. The receiver has an ON/OFF/REMOTE slider, and the fireplace also has its own on/off rocker switch.

Can I put a TV above it?
Yes, if the shelf or enclosure is at least 91-1/2" above the base of the fireplace with 2 ft of vertical vent and one 90° elbow, and the TV stays within its maker's temperature rating. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. Our guide to fireplace heat management explains other ways to keep the wall above cooler.

Will it work during a power outage?
Yes. Four AA batteries in the receiver run the ignition and burner when the power is out.

Can I change it from natural gas to propane, or the other way?
Yes. GCK-E-MONT-B-NP converts it to propane and includes the burner assembly; after conversion it runs at 40,000 to 50,000 Btu/hr. GCK-E-MONT-B-PN converts it back. Otherwise it may only run on the gas shown on its rating plate.

Is there a power vent version?
Not any more. The DRT63STTYN-B power-vent model has been discontinued. The DRT63STTEN-B vents with Superior's 8" DV Lock pipe, straight up as far as 60 ft or out through a wall with up to 20 ft of horizontal run.

Can it go in a bedroom?
Yes. The DRT63ST is listed for bedrooms, aftermarket mobile homes and manufactured homes, where local codes allow.
