What comes with every Altitude X
- A clean face with a full-width firebox, so nothing blocks the view of the flame.
- NIGHT LIGHT, which lights the firebox with the fire off.
- A heat circulating blower with variable speed and thermostatic control.
- A ProFlame II remote and the eFIRE controller, for control from the remote or a phone. The app is optional; the remote handles everyday use on its own.
- Electronic ignition, selectable between IPI and CPI, with battery back-up.
- A premium safety screen and a firestop.
- Napoleon's President's Lifetime Limited Warranty.
What you need to order with it
Logs and panels are both required and sold separately.
- A high definition log kit: birch (BLKAX36-1 / BLKAX42-1), driftwood (DLKAX36-1 / DLKAX42-1) or oak (OLKAX36-1 / OLKAX42-1).
- Decorative panels: one set from the decorative panels listing: MIRRO-FLAME porcelain reflective panels (PRPA36 / PRPA42), Black Illusion Glass (BIGAX36-1 / BIGAX42-1), Newport Standard brick (DBPAX36NS-1 / DBPAX42NS-1), Westminster Herringbone brick (DBPAX36WH-1 / DBPAX42WH-1) or Westminster Standard brick (DBPAX36WS-1 / DBPAX42WS-1).
Fronts, trims and extras
- Decorative fronts: Whitney in black (WAX36BK / WAX42BK), or Zen in black (ZAX36BK / ZAX42BK) or charcoal (ZAX36CH / ZAX42CH).
- Finishing trims: 2" black or 2" charcoal 4-sided (FTAX..BK / FTAX..CH), or the 3.5" black 3-sided bevelled trim (BTAX36BK / BTAX42BK).
- Ambient-Glow embers (W361-0239-BULK), to add to the glowing ember bed.
- A wall mount control (W660-0160).
Plan for the finished floor during rough framing: the Altitude X has to sit on a raised platform as thick as the tile, carpet or hardwood, or the floor will get in the way of the safety barrier and any decorative front. No hearth extension is required.
Heat management and mantels
Napoleon lists four optional heat management systems for the Altitude X: Dynamic Heat Control (DHC), Dynamic Heat Control Plus, Ducted Heat Management (DHM) and the Hot Air Distribution Kit (LHAD). Dynamic Heat Control can't be combined with the LHAD kit. DHC and DHM move heat away from the face of the fireplace, which lowers the temperature above it and reduces the clearances to mantels and wall-mounted TVs. Napoleon recommends installing them before the venting and gas line go in.
Combustible mantel clearances from the installation manual, measured from the top of the fireplace opening. The reduced clearances apply only with DHC or DHM installed.
| Mantel height, no DHC/DHM | Mantel depth | Mantel height, with DHC/DHM | Mantel depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10" | 2" | 1" | 12" |
| 12" | 4" | 3" | 14" |
| 14" | 6" | 5" | 16" |
| 16" | 8" | 7" | 18" |
The clearances to a TV above the fireplace are in the installation manual on each product page.
Venting
The Altitude X vents through the top on 5" exhaust and 8" air intake pipe. From the installation manual:
- Horizontal run: 20 feet at most. Vertical run: 40 feet at most. Vertical plus horizontal together: 40 feet at most.
- Longer runs need a power vent, through the power vent adaptor kit (PVALX3).
- Rigid and flexible vent can't be mixed in one run. Flexible runs use the 5 foot (GD420) or 10 foot (GD430) vent kit.
- Terminations listed for the Altitude X: the round wall terminal kit (GD422R-2) and the Silhouette terminal kit (ST58U-1).
Installation notes
- Keep furniture and other objects at least 4 feet from the front of the fireplace.
- The fireplace is hard-wired.
- The inputs above apply from 0 to 4,500 feet; higher than that, input drops 4% for every 1,000 feet.
Natural gas or propane
Each size is sold as a natural gas model (AX36NTE-2, AX42NTE-2) or a propane model (AX36PTE-2, AX42PTE-2). Napoleon's natural gas to propane conversion kit for the Altitude X includes the burner (W175-0837 for the 36", W175-0838 for the 42").
Altitude X, Elevation X or Ascent
The Altitude X sits between the Ascent X and the Elevation X. Its window is 9-7/16" taller than the Ascent 36's on the 36" size and 12-7/16" taller than the Ascent 42's on the 42", and it frames 19" deep, against 22-1/4" for the Elevation X. The Elevation X adds the ENDLESS EMBERS electric ember bed and more heat on the 42" (45,000 BTU/hr on natural gas against 38,000). Our guide Napoleon Ascent vs Ascent X vs Altitude X vs Elevation X compares all four.
Warranty
The Altitude X carries Napoleon's President's Lifetime Limited Warranty. The combustion chamber, heat exchanger, burner, logs and embers, ceramic glass (thermal breakage) and porcelain enamelled parts are covered for as long as you own the fireplace: Napoleon repairs or replaces them free for the first 10 years and supplies the parts at half the current retail price after that. Electrical and wearable parts, such as the blower, gas valve, remote and ignitor, are covered for the first year, as is warranty labour through an authorized Napoleon dealer.
Napoleon Altitude X FAQs
What is the difference between the Altitude X 36 and 42?
The 42" has a 42-1/4" x 36-1/8" viewing area against 35-1/4" x 33-1/8", and runs 38,000 BTU/hr on natural gas against 36,500. Both frame 19" deep and come with the same features.
Do I need the eFIRE app?
No. The ProFlame II remote handles everyday use on its own. The eFIRE controller is included for anyone who wants control from a phone.
Does the Altitude X come with logs?
No. A high definition log kit (birch, driftwood or oak) and one set of decorative panels are both required and sold separately.
Can I put a TV above it?
Yes, following the clearances in the installation manual. Adding Dynamic Heat Control or Ducted Heat Management reduces the clearances to mantels and wall-mounted TVs.
How tall does the wall need to be?
At least 72" from the base of the fireplace, or 84" for a recessed installation.
Can it run on propane?
Yes. Order the propane model (AX36PTE-2 or AX42PTE-2). Propane input is 34,000 BTU/hr on the 36" and 36,500 BTU/hr on the 42".
