Direct vent or vent-free
A direct vent linear fireplace is sealed. It draws combustion air from outside and sends exhaust back out through a coaxial pipe, usually through an exterior wall or the roof, so nothing from the fire enters the room. Most of the fireplaces here are direct vent.
A vent-free fireplace burns room air and has no vent at all, so it can go on an interior wall. The Empire Boulevard Vent-Free, Monessen Artisan and Superior VRL are vent-free. Vent-free gas appliances are restricted or prohibited in some states and cities, and most codes keep them out of bedrooms and bathrooms, so check local code first. Our guide to direct vent vs vent-free gas fireplaces lists where vent-free is not allowed.
Bigger fireboxes need bigger vents
Unlike an electric linear fireplace, a gas linear's heat grows with its width, and so does its venting. Smaller units use a 4" x 6-5/8" or 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" coaxial pipe, while the Napoleon Tall Vector uses 5" x 8" and the Superior DRL4000 and DRL6000 step up to 6" x 9" from 60" wide. Every model has its own maximum vent run, and each elbow counts against it. Work out the vent route against the manual for the exact model before the wall is framed. Our direct vent venting guide covers pipe sizes and run limits.
Millivolt or electronic ignition
Millivolt fireplaces, such as the Napoleon Vector, Tall Vector, Luxuria and Kingsman ZCVRB, light from a standing pilot and run without household power, so they keep working in a power cut. Intermittent pilot (IPI) and electronic ignition models, such as the Superior DRL, Majestic Jade and Echelon II and Napoleon Ascent Linear, light the pilot only when needed and rely on power to do it; check the product page for battery backup. Our millivolt vs electronic ignition guide explains the trade-offs.
See-through linear gas fireplaces
A see-through model is finished on both faces so one firebox opens into two rooms. See-through versions here include the Napoleon Tall Vector and Luxuria in 50", 62" and 74", the Majestic Echelon II in 36" and 48", the Empire Boulevard 48", the Monessen Artisan 48" vent-free and the Sierra Flame Palisade 36" and Emerson 48". They need deeper framing and both faces finished. See all see-through and multi-sided fireplaces and our see-through fireplace guide.
Linear gas fireplace FAQs
How much heat does a linear gas fireplace put out?
It depends on size. The models here run from about 15,000 BTU on the Superior DRL2035 to 50,000 BTU on the 74" Napoleon Luxuria and 72" Kingsman ZCVRB72. That is far more than a linear electric fireplace, which tops out around 5,000 BTU on 120V or 10,000 BTU on 240V.
Can a linear gas fireplace go on an interior wall?
A vent-free model can, where local code allows. A direct vent model needs a vent route outside, which usually means an exterior wall or a run up through the roof within the manufacturer's vent limits.
Natural gas or propane?
Many of these fireplaces are sold in both versions, chosen as an option on the product page, while some, such as the Napoleon Vector and Luxuria and Majestic Echelon II, are listed for natural gas on our pages. Buy the fuel your home already has, and check the page for a conversion kit if you need one.
Can I put a TV above a linear gas fireplace?
Often yes, but gas needs more clearance than electric, and the minimum distance to the TV, mantel and any recess above is set by each fireplace's manual. Get that figure before you set the framing height.
Do you have outdoor linear gas fireplaces?
Yes, in a separate collection: see our outdoor linear fireplaces.
