Choosing between Dimplex models? Our guide to Dimplex Ignite XL vs Evolve vs Bold vs Ultra compares the four Ignite lines by depth, glass, flame, app control, framing and price.
Built-in, recessed or wall mount
- Wall mount units hang on the surface of a finished wall with no framing. The Modern Flames Challenger, SimpliFire Format and Napoleon Entice are the simplest installs here.
- Recessed units sit partly or fully inside a standard stud wall. The Dimplex Prism, for example, can surface mount, partially recess into a 2x4 wall or sit flush in a 2x8 wall, and the Modern Flames Landscape Pro Slim fully recesses in a 2x6 wall or partially in a 2x4.
- Built-in units are framed into the wall or a chase and finished flush with drywall, tile or stone. This is how most media walls are built.
- Corner and three-sided: the Ortal E-Lectra and Holographic convert from front facing to left corner, right corner or three-sided by removing side panels. For two-sided models, see the Napoleon CLEARion Elite and Modern Flames Nova Clear, or our see-through electric fireplaces.
Heat: width does not add BTUs
On a standard 120V circuit an electric fireplace heater is limited to about 1,500 watts, which is roughly 5,000 BTU, and that figure stays the same whether the firebox is 50" or 100" wide. The wider unit shows more flame, not more heat. If you want more heat, choose a model rated for 240V: the Modern Flames Orion V2 Multi, SimpliFire Scion and Triton, and Napoleon Luminex and CLEARion Elite reach 10,000 BTU on a 240V circuit.
Plug-in or hardwired
Many smaller and mid-size models can plug into a 120V outlet, sometimes with an optional cord kit, which makes them easy to add to an existing room. Larger and 240V models are hardwired, and several manufacturers call for a dedicated circuit: the Modern Flames Orion Multi Heliovision, for example, is hardwire only on a dedicated 20 amp circuit. Plan the circuit with your electrician before the wall is framed, especially if you want the fireplace on a wall switch.
Indoor and outdoor models
Several linear electric fireplaces here are rated for indoor or outdoor use, including the Amantii Panorama Slim and Deep, the Remii Extra Slim, the Modern Flames Landscape Pro Slim and the Modern Flames Orion V2 range. The Dimplex Ignite Evolve is certified for indoor and covered outdoor installation. Check each product page for where outdoors it can go; the Dimplex Sierra, by contrast, is indoor only. See our outdoor electric fireplaces as well.
Linear electric fireplace FAQs
How much heat does a linear electric fireplace put out?
Most give about 5,000 BTU on a standard 120V circuit, enough for supplemental heat in a room. Models rated for 240V, such as the Modern Flames Orion V2 Multi, SimpliFire Scion and Triton, and Napoleon Luminex, reach 10,000 BTU.
Can a linear electric fireplace plug into a regular outlet?
Many can. The Modern Flames Challenger, Ortal E-Lectra and Holographic, Superior ERL and Orion V2 Slim plug into a 120V outlet, and the SimpliFire Allusion and Dimplex Multi-Fire offer plug-in cord kits. Larger and 240V models are hardwired.
How wide do linear electric fireplaces go?
The models on this page run from 26" up to 120" wide, with the Modern Flames Orion V2 Multi at 120" and the Amantii Symmetry, Dimplex Ignite, SimpliFire Allusion Edge, Superior ERL and Orion ranges reaching 100".
Can I put a TV above a linear electric fireplace?
Usually yes, and electric allows a closer stack than gas, which is why media walls so often use electric. The minimum distance to the TV and to any combustible material is set by each fireplace's manual, so check that figure before you set the framing height.
What is the difference between linear and see-through?
Linear describes the long, low shape. See-through describes a fireplace finished on two faces so it can be viewed from both sides of a wall. Some fireplaces are both, such as the Napoleon CLEARion Elite and Modern Flames Nova Clear.
