The Most Realistic Electric Fireplace: LED vs LCD vs 3D vs Holographic vs Water Vapor
Electric fireplaces no longer all look the same. The cheapest ones still bounce LED light off a spinning reflector, while the newest put a moving image of fire on an LCD screen, project a 3D flame from layered screens, or make a real mist that looks like flame and smoke. Which one is the most realistic depends on where you sit, how much wall you can give it, and what you want to spend. Here is how each flame technology works, how it compares, and which models we carry in each.
The short answer
- Most realistic from every angle: water vapor (Dimplex Opti-Myst and Optimyst). The flame is real mist, so it has depth when you look at it from the side.
- Most realistic traditional fire: Dimplex Revillusion, whose flames appear to rise out of the logs instead of from behind them.
- Most realistic modern linear: holographic (Ortal Holographic, Amantii MultiView Holo) or the Dimplex Ignite Ultra, both of which put a 3D-looking flame behind side glass.
- Sharpest, most detailed flame image: LCD (Modern Flames Orion V2), which plays a moving image of fire on a screen.
- Best value: standard LED, which still looks convincing straight on and costs the least to buy and install.

How do electric fireplaces work?
Every electric fireplace does two separate jobs. A flame effect makes the fire you see, and an electric heater, usually a fan-forced element, makes the heat you feel. Because the two are separate, almost every model can run the flame with the heat off, so you can use the fireplace in summer. On a standard 120V circuit the heater tops out at about 1,500 watts, or roughly 5,000 BTU, whatever the flame technology. Some models offer a 240V option for about double the heat.
What changes from one fireplace to the next is the flame effect, and that is what decides how real the fire looks.
Standard LED: the value choice
Many electric fireplaces, including good ones, use a proven system: LEDs shine onto a slowly rotating flame rod, and the reflected light dances across a screen behind the logs or crystals. The SimpliFire Allusion Platinum, for example, ships with a motor and rotisserie, four flame colors and 13 ember bed colors, and fits a 2x6 wall at 5 1/2" deep. The Amantii Panorama Deep uses a three-speed flame motor with two flame styles and 11 ember bed and canopy light colors.
Straight on and from across the room, a good LED fireplace is convincing. It looks flatter from a sharp side angle, and the flame color options are often more decorative than realistic. In exchange it is the least expensive, the shallowest and the easiest to install, and most models plug into a standard outlet.
Advanced LED: layers, mirrors and side glass
The next step up keeps LED flames but adds depth. Dimplex's Multi-Fire XD, used in the Ignite XL and Ignite Bold, layers multi-colored flames. The Ignite Bold adds glass on both ends and a mirrored rear pane that doubles the apparent depth of the flame, and the slim Multi-Fire Slim uses mirror technology to create depth in a 4" deep box. The Ortal E-Lectra plays an LED flame over ceramic logs, with 11 flame styles and colors and conversion to corner or three-sided.

Dimplex Ignite Ultra: glowing logs and sound

The Ignite Ultra moves the realism into the logs. Dimplex's patented Dynamic-Fire flame plays over Rhythmic logs with an inner glow that pulses in time with the flames, and built-in speakers add the sound of crackling wood. The Quick Connect logs can be moved to change the layout, and it installs 1, 2 or 3-sided. It needs a deep opening, 28" high and 15" deep, so plan it into the framing.
Dimplex Revillusion: the most realistic traditional fire

If you want a classic fireplace with logs rather than a long modern flame, the Dimplex Revillusion is the one to see. Its patented flame effect and a translucent panel make the flames appear to rise from the logs themselves rather than from behind them, which is the giveaway on most electric fireboxes. The handcrafted Realogs are cast from real wood and lit from inside, over an ember bed of lit tumbled glass and black gravel.
It comes in 24", 30", 36", a 36" portrait version and 42", each with four interior backers: Neutral Brick, Weathered Concrete, Herringbone and Black. The 36" runs on 120V, 208V or 240V, from 4,436 BTU up to 8,786 BTU, and draws just 40 watts with the heater off. It is a built-in firebox for a framed opening, so it suits a new mantel or framed surround, and it is for indoor use only. See the full range in our Dimplex Revillusion collection.
LCD: a moving image of real fire

An LCD fireplace replaces the reflector with a screen. The Modern Flames Orion V2 plays its flames on an LCD display with adaptive brightness, so the fire holds up in a sunny room as well as at night. Built-in speakers add crackling fire sounds and Bluetooth streaming, and the Modern Flames app adds new flame styles through over-the-air updates.
The Orion V2 comes as a thin Slim linear (52" to 100"), a deeper Multi linear (52" to 120") that can be built in 1, 2 or 3-sided, and a Traditional (26" to 54") that can go into an existing fireplace. All are approved for built-in installs under a covered patio. Our guide to Orion Slim vs Multi compares the two linear models.
Holographic: a 3D flame from screens

Holographic fireplaces use screens to project flame video that looks three-dimensional over a real log set. The Ortal Holographic uses dual screens behind anti-reflective glass, with six flame styles, adjustable flame height and an optional crackling sound. It converts to corner or three-sided and plugs into a 120V outlet. The Amantii MultiView Holo adds sparks and smoke effects and uses one, two or three screens depending on size (40", 55" or 75"), with a built-in Bluetooth speaker and up to 10,236 BTU on 240V.
Holographic units are deep, about 17" for the Ortal and a 20" rough opening for the Amantii, and they start at a higher price than most LED and LCD models. In return you get a flame that looks three-dimensional, which shows best in a corner or three-sided install where you see the fire from several angles.
Water vapor: the closest to real fire

A water vapor fireplace does not show a picture of fire at all. Ultrasonic transducers turn water into a fine mist, and LEDs light it from below, so what rises off the logs is real vapor that moves like flame and smoke. Because it has real depth, it looks right from the side as well as from the front. The vapor is cool, and the glass stays cool to the touch.
It is also the most involved to install. Built-in models need a water supply (a hard-plumbed line or a refill tank, depending on the model), a fresh air inlet, and a deeper wall, about 12" for the Opti-Myst Linear and up to 21" for the e-MatriX. Not all of them heat: the Optimyst Pro Box, the Opti-Myst Linear and the Mapleton stove have heaters, while the e-MatriX and the cassettes are flame-only. All are indoor only. The plug-in Optimyst Mapleton stove is the easy way in, with no framing or plumbing. Compare every model in our water vapor fireplaces collection.
Which flame technology is right for you?
Choose standard LED if:
- You want the lowest cost and the easiest install, often a plug-in.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most realistic electric fireplace?
For flame movement from every angle, water vapor fireplaces such as the Dimplex Opti-Myst and Optimyst, because the flame and smoke are real mist. For a traditional log fire, the Dimplex Revillusion. For a modern linear, holographic models such as the Ortal Holographic and Amantii MultiView Holo, the Dimplex Ignite Ultra, and the Modern Flames Orion V2 LCD.
Is an LCD electric fireplace better than LED?
An LCD fireplace plays a detailed moving image of fire on a screen, while a standard LED fireplace reflects light off a rotating rod. LCD gives a sharper, more varied flame, and the Orion V2 adds app control and new flame styles over time. LED costs less, is often shallower and is simpler to install.
Do realistic electric fireplaces put out more heat?
No. Heat comes from a separate electric heater, and on 120V most models give roughly 4,000 to 5,100 BTU whatever the flame technology. For more heat, choose a model rated for 240V, such as the Dimplex Ignite, Dimplex Revillusion, Modern Flames Orion V2 Multi or Amantii MultiView Holo.
Can you run a realistic electric fireplace without heat?
Yes. On the models in this guide the flame effect runs separately from the heater, so you can enjoy the fire year-round. Some water vapor models, such as the Dimplex e-MatriX, are flame-only and have no usable heat at all.
Do water vapor fireplaces need a water line?
Some do. The Dimplex e-MatriX must be plumbed. The Opti-Myst Linear, Optimyst Pro Box and cassettes can be plumbed or refilled by hand, and the Mapleton stove runs from a refillable bottle and plugs into a standard outlet.
What is a holographic fireplace?
A holographic electric fireplace uses one or more screens to project flame video that looks three-dimensional over a real log set. The Ortal Holographic uses dual screens behind anti-reflective glass, and the Amantii MultiView Holo uses one, two or three screens depending on size and adds sparks and smoke effects.
