Prices at Dreamwood Living as of October 2026. Slim built-in installs need a 6 1/2" deep opening. For a 3-sided or bay Multi install the opening is slightly narrower; see the product page for the exact width.
Which Orion V2 should you choose?
Choose the Slim for a wall mount or a shallow recess. It is just over 6" deep, needs a framing opening only 6" deep (6 1/2" for a full built-in), and can plug into a 120V outlet on a dedicated 15 amp circuit, so it is the simplest Orion V2 to install.
Choose the Multi for a built-in feature wall, a corner or a bay. It can be finished on one, two or three sides, it goes up to 120" wide, and on a 240V circuit it doubles its heat to 10,000 BTU. It is hardwired only, so plan for an electrician.
Choose the Traditional to replace an old wood or gas fireplace, or for a classic surround and mantel. It slides into an existing fireplace opening, with the outlet at the back or side of the firebox, or builds into a new framed wall. Several sizes also offer an optional extra-wide surround; the product page lists the part numbers.
Orion V2 power and heat
Every Orion V2 draws about 12.2 amps and needs its own dedicated circuit. On 120V it runs at 1,465 watts for 5,000 BTU. The Multi, and the Traditional in 36", 42" and 54", can be hardwired to a dedicated 20 amp, 2-pole 240V circuit to run at 2,930 watts for 10,000 BTU. The Slim and the 26" and 30" Traditional are 120V only. The flame display, lights and sound can all run with the heater off, so you can use the fireplace year round.
Indoor and covered outdoor use
All Orion V2 models are approved for outdoor use as a built-in under a covered patio, away from direct rain and direct sunlight. The roof overhang and side protection must cover at least half the height measured from the base of the fireplace, and the base must sit at least 2" above the floor. Wall mount installs are indoor only. See more options in outdoor electric fireplaces.
Modern Flames Orion V2 FAQs
What is the difference between the Orion V2 Slim and Multi?
The Slim is 6 5/16" deep, runs on 120V at 5,000 BTU and can plug in. The Multi is 9 9/16" deep and taller, is hardwired, reaches 10,000 BTU on 240V, comes in a 120" size and can be built in as a 2 or 3-sided fireplace. The Slim uses a logs and crystals media bed and the Multi uses logs and black glass.
Can the Orion V2 Traditional go into my existing fireplace?
Yes, it is listed as a fireplace insert. The existing firebox needs to be at least as large as the insert opening on the product page (for example 32 5/8" W x 23 7/8" H x 10" D for the 36"), with an outlet or circuit at the back or side of the firebox.
Does the Orion V2 need a dedicated circuit?
Yes. Every size needs a dedicated circuit: 15 amp minimum (20 amp preferred) on 120V, or a 20 amp 2-pole circuit for 240V operation.
How much clearance does the Orion V2 need?
Keep furniture, drapes, bedding and other combustibles at least 36" from the front of the fireplace. The installation manual linked on each product page has the full framing and finishing details.
Can I control the Orion V2 with my phone?
Yes. The Modern Flames app adjusts flame color, brightness, heat and display modes, and installs over-the-air updates with new flame styles. A remote is also included.
