Superior DRL6072 72" Linear Contemporary Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

The Superior DRL6072 is a 72" linear direct vent gas fireplace from the DRL6000 series, which comes with a factory-installed blower, floor lighting, a black porcelain liner and a multi-function remote. The ceramic glass viewing area is 68-5/8" wide and 15-5/8" tall, and the burner runs from 45,000 down to 31,500 Btu/hr on natural gas over six flame settings.

It ships for natural gas (DRL6072TEN); Superior's conversion kit changes it to propane (43,000 to 32,250 Btu/hr). It is a sealed-combustion unit that vents through 6" x 9" Superior 6DVL (DV Lock) pipe, and the electronic IPI/CPI ignition has a four AA battery backup, so the burner still lights in a power outage; the blower and lights wait for power to come back. Non-combustible fireboard ships in the box to finish the face, and a see-through kit can turn it into a two-sided fireplace.

If you don't need the blower, lights and remote, the Superior DRL4072 is the same 72" size and framing without them. The DRL6000 series also comes in 48" (DRL6048), 60" (DRL6060) and 84" (DRL6084).

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances to combustibles: 1" to the outer wrapper at the back and sides, 0" at the side spacers, 0" at the top of the fireboard nailing flange and 0" at the floor. Don't pack insulation or other material around the fireplace.
  • Ceiling and enclosure: at least 84" from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling, and an 84" enclosure height.
  • Header: a header can sit on top of the fireboard nailing flange, which keeps it 11" above the fireplace top, but it can't be supported by the fireplace.
  • Front: keep 36" clear in front of the glass.
  • Side walls: a combustible side wall 14" or more from the fireplace opening can run any length; at 8-1/4" it can project up to 12". Combustible mantel legs must stay within the 45 degree safe zone shown in the manual.
  • Mantel: a 12" deep combustible mantel needs to be at least 12" above the fireplace opening; shallower mantels can sit lower, per the mantel chart in the manual.
  • Fireboard and finish: the 1/2" non-combustible fireboard that ships with the fireplace must be installed and can't be replaced or covered with drywall or other combustible material. Tile and other non-combustible facing can go over it.
  • TV above: Superior suggests mounting a TV at least 12" above the fireplace opening on a flush wall, or 18" in a recessed wall pocket with the HeatFlo kit, and the TV must stay within its maker's temperature rating.
  • Floor: on carpet, vinyl or any combustible floor other than wood, set the fireplace on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit.
  • Venting: use Superior 6DVL (DV Lock) 6" x 9" direct vent pipe. Start with at least 2 ft of vertical vent off the fireplace before any offset, and stay within 40 ft of vertical rise and the horizontal runs in the vent chart. Up to two 4 ft sections of 6DVL flex can be used, but flex can't pass through a ceiling, attic or wall. Keep 3" of clearance above horizontal vent runs and 1" at the sides and bottom, and 1" around vertical runs.
  • Power vent: for runs that natural draft venting can't handle, such as down-and-out installations, Superior's power vent kit uses Secure Vent rigid or Secure Flex pipe with a horizontal termination and the 6DVL to SV4.5 adapter.
  • See-through: the see-through conversion kit includes its own fireboard and framing changes. The factory blower can't be used in a see-through installation.
  • Gas: inlet pressure must be 5" to 10.5" WC on natural gas or 11" to 13" WC on propane. Propane needs the conversion kit.
  • Power: run a 3-wire, 120 VAC unswitched supply to the junction box on the left side of the fireplace. The batteries are backup only, and the blower and lights don't run on battery.
  • Altitude: the standard orifices cover 0 to 4,500 ft. Above that, the input has to be reduced; ask your gas supplier.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", and the shutoff must be a T-handle valve. A horizontal termination less than 7 ft above grade also needs a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector with battery backup on the floor where the fireplace is, and a GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW sign outside.
  • Manufactured homes: ground the fireplace to the chassis and don't cut or weaken the cross members. It must run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified conversion kit is used.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer following the installation manual and local codes. Have the fireplace and venting inspected once a year by a qualified service person.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the DRL6072 remote control?
The included hand-held remote turns the fireplace on and off, runs it in thermostat mode, and sets the flame height, blower speed and floor lighting, each with six settings. It also switches the pilot between IPI and CPI.

Is it available for propane?
It ships for natural gas. Superior's GCK-SM-6072NP conversion kit changes it to propane, at 43,000 Btu/hr high and 32,250 Btu/hr low.

Can it be a see-through fireplace?
Yes. The see-through conversion kit makes it two-sided, and it comes with the fireboard and instructions for that setup. The factory blower can't be used in a see-through installation.

Can I put a TV above it?
Superior suggests at least 12" from the fireplace opening to the TV on a flush wall, or 18" with a recessed wall pocket, and the TV must stay within its maker's temperature rating. The HeatFlo kit sends warm air out a register near the ceiling instead of up the wall, with no blower or power. Our guide to fireplace heat management explains how these kits work.

Will it work during a power outage?
Yes. Four AA batteries run the ignition and burner when the power is out. The blower and floor lighting won't run until power returns.

Can it vent down and out?
Yes, with Superior's power vent kit (PVK-PF2-SV4.5) and the 6DVL4.5PVA adapter. It uses Secure Vent rigid or Secure Flex pipe with a horizontal termination for layouts that natural draft venting can't handle.

What's the difference between the DRL6072 and the DRL4072?
They share the same 72" size, framing and Btu range. The DRL4072 leaves out the blower, floor lighting, porcelain liner and remote, comes with reflective black glass and a black painted interior, and needs a wall switch, thermostat or remote added.

Can it go in a bedroom?
Yes. The DRL6072 is listed for bedrooms, aftermarket mobile homes and permanently located manufactured homes, where local codes allow.
