Superior Driftwood Log Set DRFTWD-LOG72

The Superior DRFTWD-LOG72 is the high-definition driftwood log set Superior makes for its 72" linear direct-vent gas fireplaces, the Superior DRL4072 and the Superior DRL6072. The logs sit on the fireplace's crushed glass bed and turn the long linear flame into a driftwood fire.

The set is optional, and each fireplace comes with four 5 lb bags of glass media (reflective black on the DRL4072, platinum on the DRL6072). Superior also lists a river rock kit and a driftwood pieces and rock kit for these fireplaces, and logs and rocks can be used together. For the other linear sizes, see the DRFTWD-LOGDV48, DRFTWD-LOG60 and DRFTWD-LOG84.

Installation Requirements

  • When: only after the fireplace is fully installed, the gas line has been leak-tested and the burner has been lit and checked. Handle the logs with the gas and power off and the logs cool; they stay hot for up to an hour after the fireplace shuts off.
  • Glass media first: spread the fireplace's glass media evenly, only one layer over the burner, and keep it off the pilot shield (media around the shield is fine).
  • Logs and rocks: place them on the glass bed following the instructions that come with each kit, keeping every piece out of the flames and clear of the pilot. Check the pilot and burner flames afterward.
  • Rules: use only the glass media and accessories Superior approves for the fireplace, and never burn wood in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fireplaces does it fit?
The Superior DRL4072 and DRL6072. Each linear size (48", 60", 72" and 84") has its own driftwood set.

Is it required?
No. The fireplace comes with crushed glass media and runs without logs; Superior lists the logs and river rocks as optional ways to change the look.

Can I add river rock too?
Yes. Superior allows logs and river rocks together in this fireplace and lists the River Rock, 25 Piece Kit (RIVROCK-1PK) and the Driftwood Pieces and Rock Media Kit (DRFTWD-ROCK-KIT) for it. Follow each kit's instructions and keep everything out of the flames.

How do I clean the logs?
Wait until they're cool, lift them out carefully (fiber logs get fragile once they've been fired) and clean off carbon with a vacuum or a soft brush, such as a paintbrush. Put each piece back exactly where the instructions show; logs out of position cause carbon build-up and change how the fireplace burns.

What if I see soot on the logs or glass?
Soot almost always means a flame is touching a log. Turn the fireplace off, let it cool, and check every piece against the placement instructions so nothing sits in the flames or over the burner ports. If it still soots with the logs in the right place, have a qualified service technician check the burner's air adjustment.

Warranty

The log set is covered under Superior's 20 Year Limited Warranty on the Superior DRL4072 or DRL6072 it's installed in, which treats logs this way:

  • Logs: replacement for one year from installation, against thermal breakage only
  • Labor: paid at IHP rates for the logs' one-year warranty period

Wear and tear, misuse and faulty installation aren't covered, and Superior says using a log set that isn't approved for the fireplace voids the fireplace's warranty. The warranty is for the original owner of a fireplace installed in the US or Canada. Full terms are in the warranty certificate.
