Superior DRT4245 45" Traditional Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

The Superior DRT4245 is the 45" size of Superior's DRT4200 full-size traditional direct vent gas fireplaces, and it comes with a factory-installed blower with six speeds, interior lighting with six settings and a full-function remote. The firebox is 21" deep, with a high-definition ceramic fiber log set on a heavy-duty grate behind ceramic glass, and the glass viewing area is 39-1/4" wide and 24-1/2" tall.

It comes as the DRT4245TEN-E for natural gas (42,000 Btu/hr high, 25,000 low) or the DRT4245TEP-E for propane (41,000 high, 22,000 low). The electronic IPI/CPI ignition runs on 120 V with four AA batteries as backup, so the fire keeps going in a power outage; the blower and lights wait for power to come back. It vents from the top in 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" Superior Secure Vent or Secure Flex pipe, with at least 1 ft of vertical vent before the first elbow.

Two finish choices are required: a facade (the Vista frame, or a Reflection or Craftsman designer facade in black or warm chestnut, each with its screen barrier and hood) and a firebox liner (black reflective porcelain or Blackstone, Greystone or Blended Brown stacked ceramic). If you don't need the blower, lights and remote, the Superior DRT4045 is the same 45" size without them. The DRT4200 series also comes in 40" (DRT4240).

Front face height (B) 34-5/8"
Glass viewing height (C) 24-1/2"
Glass viewing width (D) 39-1/4"
Overall width (E) 45-1/4"

Letters match the drawing above.

Framing

Opening width 45-7/8"
Opening height 41-1/4", including the 4" top standoffs
Depth 23"

Framing is 2x4 or larger. The opening sizes are minimums, and Superior recommends an extra 1/8" per side. The depth is for a fireplace face installed flush with the framing. The vent framing height and corner framing dimensions are in the installation manual.

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances to combustibles: 1-1/2" to the outer wrapper at the back and 1/2" at the sides, 0" at the spacers, the top standoffs and the floor.
  • Ceiling: at least 64" from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling.
  • Header: a header can touch the bent-up 4" top standoffs but can't rest on them or be notched around them. All framing above the fireplace must support itself.
  • Front: keep 36" clear in front of the glass.
  • Side walls: at 6" or more from the side of the fireplace, a combustible side wall can run any length. Combustible mantel legs must stay within the 45 degree safe zone shown in the manual.
  • Mantel: a 12" deep combustible mantel needs to be at least 18" above the fireplace opening and a 2" deep one at least 8", per the mantel chart in the manual. Non-combustible mantels can go at any height, but nothing may hang below the hood.
  • Wall finish: combustible materials can come down to the top of the non-combustible board that ships with the fireplace, but never in front of or over the fireplace face. Non-combustible trim can go on the face as long as it doesn't cover the glass or the control compartment. With a designer facade and thick facing, use the stone stop kit.
  • Shelf or TV above: with top venting and a 90° elbow, a combustible shelf must be at least 68" above the base of the fireplace with a rigid Secure Vent elbow, or 70" with a Secure Flex elbow. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. A TV above must stay within its maker's temperature rating.
  • Facade and liner: the fireplace can't be run until the required facade and firebox liner are installed. The facade carries the screen barrier and the hood.
  • Floor: no hearth extension is required, and one must not block the lower control compartment door. On carpet, vinyl or any combustible floor other than wood, set the fireplace on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit.
  • Venting: use only Superior Secure Vent, Secure Flex or Z-Flex GA pipe in the 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" size, from the top of the fireplace. Straight vertical runs are 6 to 60 ft, and horizontal runs can reach 25 ft with the vertical rise the vent chart calls for, with up to three 90° elbows. The DRT4200 needs at least 1 ft of vertical vent off the top before the first elbow. Keep 3" of clearance above horizontal vent runs and 1" at the sides and bottom.
  • Before first use: remove the cardboard from under the two pressure relief plates in the firebox.
  • Gas: run a 1/2" gas line to the left side of the fireplace. Inlet pressure must be 5" to 10.5" WC on natural gas or 11" to 13" WC on propane.
  • Power: an unswitched 3-wire 120 VAC supply to the junction box is required. The remote's wall receiver mounts in a junction box (not included) next to the fireplace, within reach of its wiring harness. The batteries are backup only; the blower and lights don't run on battery.
  • Altitude: the standard orifices cover 0 to 4,500 ft. Above that, the input has to be reduced; ask your gas supplier.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", and the shutoff must be a T-handle valve. A horizontal termination less than 7 ft above grade also needs a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector with battery backup on the floor where the fireplace is, and a GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW sign outside.
  • Manufactured homes: ground the fireplace to the chassis and don't cut or weaken the cross members. It must run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified conversion kit is used.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer following the installation manual and local codes. Superior calls for an inspection by a qualified service person before first use and once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the DRT4245 remote control?
The included remote turns the fireplace on and off, runs it in thermostat mode, and sets the flame height, blower speed and interior lighting. The blower and lights each have six settings. It also switches the pilot between IPI and CPI, and the wall receiver has an ON/OFF/REMOTE slider, so you can still run the fireplace if the remote is misplaced.

Can it vent out the back?
No. The DRT4245 is a top vent fireplace. The vent can turn horizontal after it leaves the top, once it has risen at least 1 ft, and run out through a wall, or go straight up through the roof.

Can I put a TV above it?
Yes, if the shelf or TV mount is at least 68" above the base of the fireplace with a rigid elbow (70" with Secure Flex) and the TV stays within its maker's temperature rating. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. Our guide to fireplace heat management explains other ways to keep the wall above cooler.

Will it work during a power outage?
Yes. Four AA batteries in the receiver run the ignition and burner when the power is out. The blower and lights won't run until power returns.

Can I change it from natural gas to propane, or the other way?
Yes, with Superior's conversion kit: GCKSIT4245ENP for natural gas to propane or GCKSIT4245EPN for propane to natural gas. In a manufactured home, the fireplace may only run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified kit is used.

What's the difference between the DRT4245 and the DRT4045?
Both are 45" Superior full-size traditional direct vent fireplaces with the same framing, and both need a facade. The DRT4045 leaves out the blower, lighting and remote, has tempered glass and a black painted interior, and runs at 31,000 Btu/hr high on natural gas against 42,000 for the DRT4245. It needs a wall switch, thermostat or remote added, and it can take an elbow right on the flue collar, which lowers the shelf height above it.

Can it go in a bedroom?
Yes. The DRT4245 is listed for bedrooms and for aftermarket, permanently located manufactured homes in the USA, where local codes allow.
