Superior DRT2040 40" Traditional Direct Vent Gas Fireplace

The Superior DRT2040 is the 40" size of Superior's DRT2000 traditional direct vent gas fireplaces: a 17" deep firebox with a ceramic fiber log set, glowing embers, a black painted interior and a glass viewing area 34-1/4" wide and 24-1/2" tall. It ships with the Vista inside-fit facade and its protective screen barrier, so the only parts you have to add are a control and the vent pipe.

You choose the ignition and fuel when you order. The millivolt models (DRT2040DMN-E natural gas, DRT2040DMP-E propane) light with a piezo igniter and run the fire with no house power. The electronic models (DRT2040DEN-E, DRT2040DEP-E) use IPI/CPI ignition on 120 V with four AA batteries as backup. Natural gas runs from 21,000 down to 17,000 Btu/hr and propane from 19,000 to 15,000. The vent can leave from the top or the back of the fireplace in 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" Superior Secure Vent or Secure Flex pipe.

From there you can add a blower, a Reflection or Craftsman designer facade in black or warm chestnut, a stacked ceramic or black porcelain liner, or a stainless surround. The Superior DRT3040 is the same 40" size with a higher input and your pick of facade, and the Superior DRT3540 adds a blower, interior lighting and a remote. The DRT2000 series also comes in 35" (DRT2035) and 45" (DRT2045).

Framing

Opening width (L) 40-7/8"
Opening height (M) 41-1/4", including the 4" top standoffs
Depth (O) 18-1/2"
Top vent, minimum height to the vent framing (N) 43-3/4"
Rear vent, minimum height to the vent framing (P) 28-1/4"

Framing is 2x4 or larger. The opening sizes are minimums, and Superior recommends an extra 1/8" per side. The depth assumes 1/2" drywall. Framing for Secure Flex top venting and for corner installations is in the installation manual.

Installation Requirements

  • Clearances to combustibles: 1-1/2" to the outer wrapper at the back and 1/2" at the sides, 0" at the spacers, the top standoffs and the floor. With top venting, nothing combustible may touch the rear flue cover.
  • Ceiling: at least 64" from the bottom of the fireplace to the ceiling.
  • Header: a header can touch the bent-up 4" top standoffs but can't rest on them or be notched around them. All framing above the fireplace must support itself.
  • Front: keep 36" clear in front of the glass.
  • Side walls: the fireplace can't be recessed behind the wall surface. With one side flush to a wall, the wall on the other side must not extend past the front edge of the unit. At 6" or more from the side, a combustible side wall can run any length, and combustible mantel legs must stay within the 45 degree safe zone shown in the manual.
  • Mantel: a 12" deep combustible mantel needs to be at least 16" above the fireplace opening and a 2" deep one at least 6", per the mantel chart in the manual. Non-combustible mantels can go at any height, but nothing may hang below the hood.
  • Wall finish: combustible finishes must stay off the black front face. Non-combustible facing up to 6" deep can overlap the face, as long as it doesn't cover the glass or block removal of the facade. With a designer facade and thick facing, use the stone stop kit.
  • Shelf or TV above: a combustible shelf must be at least 57" above the base of the fireplace, with top or rear venting. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. A TV above must stay within its maker's temperature rating.
  • Floor: no hearth extension is required. On carpet, vinyl or any combustible floor other than wood, set the fireplace on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit.
  • Venting: use only Superior Secure Vent, Secure Flex or Z-Flex GA pipe in the 4-1/2" x 7-1/2" size, from the top or the back of the fireplace. Straight vertical runs are 6 to 60 ft, and horizontal runs can reach 25 ft with the vertical rise the vent chart calls for, with up to three 90° elbows. Secure Flex on a rear vent horizontal termination needs at least 1 ft of vertical rise. Keep 3" of clearance above horizontal vent runs and 1" at the sides and bottom.
  • Gas: run a 1/2" gas line to the left side of the fireplace. Inlet pressure must be 5" to 10.5" WC on natural gas or 11" to 13" WC on propane.
  • Power: millivolt models need no power for the fire; if a blower may be added, have power run when the fireplace goes in. Electronic models need an unswitched 120 VAC supply to the junction box, with the batteries as backup only. The FBK-250 blower runs from the unswitched outlet; the FBK-100 and FBK-200 also need a switched circuit to a wall switch box, run at the time of installation.
  • Control: one control must be connected before the fireplace can run, using the 15 ft of two-conductor wire in the box. On millivolt models, never connect a wall switch to 120 V.
  • Altitude: the standard orifices cover 0 to 4,500 ft. Above that, the input has to be reduced; ask your gas supplier.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", and the shutoff must be a T-handle valve. A horizontal termination less than 7 ft above grade also needs a hard-wired carbon monoxide detector with battery backup on the floor where the fireplace is, and a GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW sign outside.
  • Manufactured homes: ground the fireplace to the chassis and don't cut or weaken the cross members. It must run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified conversion kit is used.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer following the installation manual and local codes. Superior calls for an inspection by a qualified service person before first use and once a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Millivolt or electronic ignition: which should I order?
Millivolt models light a standing pilot with a piezo igniter and run the fire with no house power, which suits cabins and homes with frequent outages. Electronic models light the pilot only when the fireplace is turned on (IPI) and run on house power with four AA batteries as backup. Both use the same framing, venting and facades. Our millivolt vs electronic ignition guide compares pilot gas use and cost.

Do I need a remote or wall switch with the DRT2040?
Yes. One control must be used on both versions: an on/off wall switch, a thermostat or a remote, and on millivolt models a unit-mounted rocker switch also works. None comes in the box, so pick one from the list above. A 15 ft run of two-conductor wire ships with the fireplace for a wall control.

Can it vent out the back?
Yes. It has a combination flue: the vent can leave from the top or from the back, and the vent cover plates for switching it ship with the fireplace. A rear vent can go straight out through an outside wall behind the fireplace.

Can I put a TV above it?
Yes, if the shelf or TV mount is at least 57" above the base of the fireplace and the TV stays within its maker's temperature rating. Don't insulate the space between the fireplace and the shelf. Our guide to fireplace heat management explains other ways to keep the wall above cooler.

Will it work during a power outage?
Yes. Millivolt models need no power to run the fire, and electronic models run on four AA batteries when the power is out. A blower won't run until power returns.

Can I change it from natural gas to propane, or the other way?
Yes, with Superior's conversion kit for your ignition type: GCK2SIT2040MNP or GCK2SIT2040ENP for natural gas to propane, GCK2SIT2040MPN or GCK2SIT2040EPN for propane to natural gas. In a manufactured home, the fireplace may only run on the gas shown on its rating plate unless a certified kit is used.

What's the difference between the DRT2040, DRT3040 and DRT3540?
All three are 40" Superior traditional direct vent fireplaces with the same framing. The DRT2040 includes the Vista facade and runs at 21,000 Btu/hr high on natural gas. The DRT3040 runs at 24,000 Btu/hr and has a high-definition log set, but the facade is ordered separately. The DRT3540 is electronic only and adds a blower, interior lighting, a remote and ceramic glass at 33,000 Btu/hr; it needs a facade and a liner.

Can it go in a bedroom?
Yes. The DRT2040 is listed for bedrooms and for aftermarket, permanently located manufactured homes in the USA, where local codes allow.
