Empire Vented Slope Glaze Burner Millivolt with On/Off Switch (Burner Only)

The Empire VSR vented slope glaze burner (model numbers VSR18NAT, VSR18LP, VSR24NAT, VSR24LP, VSR30NAT and VSR30LP) is an 18", 24" or 30" millivolt gas log burner for an existing wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney. It is certified as a vented decorative appliance (ANSI Z21.60 / CGA 2.26), so it runs with the damper open and is not a vent-free heater.

The burner comes with an on/off switch; a remote or wall switch is optional. It is sold as the burner only: choose one of Empire's slope glaze log sets in the same size, ordered separately.

Log Sets (choose one in the burner size, ordered separately)

Empire's price list puts these slope glaze log sets with the vented burner. Driftwood is stocked in 18" and 30" only.

Installation Notes

  • Fireplace: install only in a solid-fuel burning fireplace with a working flue built of non-combustible material. Have the chimney and firebox cleaned before installation and every year after. Seal fresh air vents and ash clean-out doors, but never the damper.
  • Damper: the supplied damper clamp keeps the damper from closing. The manual has a chart of the minimum damper opening by chimney height and input rate. In Massachusetts the damper must be removed or welded permanently open, vent-free products are not approved, and the gas shut-off must be a T-handle type.
  • Operation: do not run the burner with glass doors closed, and keep a fireplace screen in place while it runs.
  • Grate: center the burner so the grate clears the fireplace screen and anchor it to the floor with the screws provided (two 5/32" holes about 1 1/2" deep for masonry screws).
  • Embers and rock: spread the rock wool lightly on the burner, never over the large rear ports or near the pilot; the lava rock goes on the fireplace floor in front of the burner pan and is decorative only.
  • High altitude: above 2,000 ft in the US the input may need to be reduced, generally 4% for each 1,000 ft above sea level; check with your gas utility.
  • Installer: installation by a qualified agency, following the manual and local codes or ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54. In Massachusetts, gas work must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
