Installation Requirements
-
Fireplace: installs in a listed wood-burning masonry or factory-built fireplace that has been cleaned and inspected and has at least the minimum opening above. The damper must be removed or locked fully open. Firebrick, glass doors, screen rails and grates can be removed from a factory-built fireplace to gain space.
-
Hearth: no extra hearth extension is needed, but the original non-combustible hearth must stay in place, at least 16" deep and the width of the fireplace; wood, vinyl or carpet may not sit directly in front of the insert.
-
Clearances: at least 8" from the side of the opening to a perpendicular combustible side wall and 36" from the top of the opening to the ceiling; zero clearance to the hearth below the insert.
-
Mantel: a combustible mantel or trim can project 1 3/4" at 12" above the opening, up to 12" at 21"; follow the mantel and trim chart in the installation manual.
-
Venting: a 3" exhaust and 4" intake flexible liner run up the existing chimney to a vertical termination cap, up to 40 ft; the termination must meet the minimum height above the roof shown in the manual.
-
Power: a 120 VAC cord is included; a junction box in the old firebox or a nearby outlet on the hearth can supply it, with GFCI protection where codes require.
-
Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes. In Massachusetts the installation must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
