Interior panels, doors and burners
The Ashland takes decorative brick interior panels in traditional or herringbone, in several colors, sized to each fireplace. Refractory panel extensions and a yellow firebrick hearth refractory are available separately, as is a glass bi-fold door sized to the 36", 42" and 50". If you plan to run gas rather than wood, Majestic makes indoor burners for the Ashland in 18" and 24" lengths for both natural gas and propane.
Ashland or Biltmore?
Both are Majestic open wood burning fireplaces for indoor installation, and they overlap on width: both come in 36", 42" and 50". The difference is height. The Ashland opening is 38" tall in every size and the whole fireplace frames to 74-1/2". The Biltmore opening is 28-1/2" on the 36 and 42 and 33" on the 50, framing to 59-3/4" or 71".
So the Ashland is the taller, more architectural of the two and wants a wall built for it, while the Biltmore fits more easily into a conventional opening. Width alone will not tell you which one suits your room.
Majestic Ashland FAQs
What size opening do I need to frame for a Majestic Ashland?
The Ashland 36 needs a rough opening of 47-7/8" wide by 74-1/2" high by 28-1/2" deep. The 42 needs 53-7/8" by 74-1/2" by 28-1/2". The 50 needs 61-7/8" by 74-1/2" by 28-1/2". Every size is the same height and depth, so stepping up or down changes the width only.
How tall is the Ashland firebox opening?
38 inches, on all three sizes. That is the defining feature of the line and considerably taller than most open wood burning fireplaces, which is what gives the Ashland its upright, architectural proportion.
Can the Majestic Ashland burn gas instead of wood?
Yes. Every Ashland includes dual gas knockouts, and Majestic makes indoor burners for it in 18" and 24" lengths for natural gas or propane. A gas line can be run at installation or added later by a qualified installer.
Is there an outdoor version of the Majestic Ashland?
Yes, the Majestic Castlewood, which shares the same 38" opening height. It is made in 42" and 50" only, with no 36" equivalent. The Castlewood 50 matches the Ashland 50 dimension for dimension; the 42 differs very slightly, framing 1/8" shallower with an opening 1/8" narrower.
Does the Ashland need a chimney?
Yes. This is a site-framed, chimney-vented wood burning fireplace, not an insert and not a plug-in unit. It needs a framed enclosure built to the dimensions above and a listed chimney system run to the roof. The installation manual on each product page gives the full venting and clearance requirements.
