Majestic Biltmore 50 inch open wood burning fireplace

Majestic Biltmore Wood Burning Fireplace

The Majestic Biltmore is an open, radiant wood burning fireplace built to read like site-built masonry. It comes in three firebox openings, 36", 42" and 50", each with a flush hearth, brick or herringbone interior panels, and dual gas knockouts if you later want to run a gas log set.

All three ship with a steel grate, outside air kit, safety firescreen and attic insulation shield, and all three are UL/ULC listed for indoor installation. Rough framing dimensions for every size are further down this page.

How to choose between the Biltmore 36, 42 and 50

The three Biltmores are the same fireplace at three scales. The 36" and 42" share a height and sit within half an inch of each other in depth, so stepping between them is mostly a question of how much wall you have. The 50" is a different proposition: it is nearly a foot taller in rough framing and three inches deeper, so it has to be planned into the wall rather than dropped into an opening sized for the smaller two.

Measure the rough opening you can frame, not the finished fireplace front. The front is narrower than the framing in every size.

Traditional brick or herringbone interior

Every Biltmore takes brick interior panels in one of two patterns. The traditional pattern reads as a conventional masonry firebox and recedes into most rooms. Herringbone sets the brick on an angle and gives the firebox a detail of its own, which tends to suit interiors that already have millwork or tile pattern to answer to. Both come in several colors, and neither changes the firebox dimensions. The pattern is chosen when the fireplace is ordered and is not designed to be swapped afterwards, so it is worth settling early.

Running gas instead of wood

The Biltmore is built as an open wood burner, but every size leaves the factory with dual gas knockouts, so a gas line can be run to the firebox and an approved gas log set dropped in. That keeps the open-hearth look while giving you a fire that lights on demand. If you expect to burn gas most of the time, tell us before you order and we will confirm the log set that fits the size you have chosen.

Installation

This is a site-framed, chimney-vented wood burning fireplace, not an insert and not a plug-in unit. It needs a framed enclosure built to the dimensions above and a listed chimney system run to the roof. The installation manual linked on each product page gives the full venting and clearance requirements. Plan on a hearth professional or a contractor who has installed wood burning fireplaces before, and check local code before you order.

Majestic Biltmore FAQs

What size opening do I need to frame for a Majestic Biltmore?

The Biltmore 36 needs a rough opening of 45-1/2" wide by 59-3/4" high by 28" deep. The 42 needs 51-1/2" by 59-3/4" by 28-1/2". The 50 needs 61-5/8" by 71" by 30-1/2". Frame to those numbers rather than to the finished front width, which is narrower in every size.

Does the Majestic Biltmore have glass doors?

No. The Biltmore is an open-hearth fireplace, which is what gives it the full, unobstructed flame view. It ships with a safety firescreen, and it heats by radiation rather than through a blower, so it runs silently.

Can the Majestic Biltmore burn gas instead of wood?

Yes. All three sizes include dual gas knockouts and accept an optional gas log set, so the fireplace can be plumbed for gas at installation or converted later by a qualified installer.

Can the Majestic Biltmore be installed outdoors?

No. The Biltmore is listed for interior installation only, but you do not have to redesign around that. Majestic builds the same fireplace for outdoor use as the Majestic Cottagewood, in the same 36", 42" and 50" sizes and to the same dimensions, framing included. A wall drawn for a Biltmore will take the matching Cottagewood without a single measurement changing.

What is the difference between the traditional and herringbone brick interiors?

The difference is appearance only. Both are brick interior panels, both come in several colors, and neither changes the firebox dimensions. Traditional lays the brick flat in courses; herringbone sets it at an angle. Choose the pattern when you order, as it is not designed to be changed after installation.
