The Superior WRE4536 is the 36" model in Superior's WRE4500 Custom Series of outdoor wood-burning fireplaces, built for large outdoor spaces: a 30" tall opening lined with white refractory panels that run to the front edge, a stainless steel face and body, and a fully insulated firebox for colder climates. Choose white stacked (WRE4536WS) or white herringbone (WRE4536WH) panels in the options above. A large smoke dome with no visible smoke shelf sits over a heavy-duty stainless grate, and stainless mesh screens, a damper control on the front face and a hidden ash cleanout come standard.
It vents through Superior's 12" double-wall chimney, ordered separately: 12DM standard pipe, or 12HT hi-temp pipe, which Superior recommends for outdoor and coastal sites and requires in Canada. The chimney has to reach at least 9.5 feet from the base of the fireplace to the outlet of the cap, and outside air kits can connect on either side.
It also accepts vented gas logs or a vent-free gas log heater, with gas line access on both sides. The WRE4500 comes in 42" and 50" sizes too (WRE4542, WRE4550).
Required – Chimney pipe, ordered separately:

Slide the fireplace back into the framed opening until the nailing flanges touch the side framing, shim it level and square with sheet metal, and fasten it through the side flanges with screws or nails. Keep 1-1/2" between the framing and the back and sides (not needed at the nailing flanges); framing can touch the top spacers.
What chimney does it need?
Superior's 12" double-wall chimney (12-3/8" inside, 15" outside): 12DM standard or 12HT hi-temp pipe, plus a round top or chase top cap, all listed above. Outdoors it must reach at least 9.5 feet from the base of the fireplace to the flue outlet of the cap, with at least 4 feet of pipe; the fireplace itself counts for 66-1/2" of that. Under a roof, the cap must also clear the roof by 3 feet and any part of the roof within 10 feet by 2 feet.
Can I burn gas logs in it?
Yes. It is approved for vented gas logs listed to ANSI Z21.60 or Z21.84 (with the damper locked open and any glass doors open) and for vent-free gas log heaters listed to ANSI Z21.11.2. Check that the log set fits the firebox (36" wide at the front, 21-1/2" at the back and 20" deep). There is gas line access on both sides, and a certified gas log lighter can be installed for wood fires.
What should I burn?
Dry, seasoned hardwood, ideally seasoned for about a year, and about three logs on the grate at a time; overloading it only adds smoke. Manufactured firelogs are fine if they are made for fireplaces, but don't poke them while they burn. Never burn treated lumber, plywood, driftwood, charcoal, coal, trash or Christmas tree branches, and never start a fire with gasoline, lighter fluid or kerosene.
Stacked or herringbone?
Both are white refractory panels. The WRE4536WS has a stacked brick pattern and the WRE4536WH a herringbone pattern; the size and fit are the same.
Does it need glass doors?
No. The stainless mesh screens come with it. The BDG36 bi-fold glass doors are an option; run them fully open or fully closed, and close the screen before closing the doors.
How close can a mantel be?
Keep combustible trim and mantels at least 12" from the opening, and anything combustible that sticks out more than 1-1/2" at least 15" above the top of the opening. Brick, stone or tile can overlap the face itself.
Anything to know about the first fires?
Let the refractory panels cure for 24 hours, then keep the first three or four fires small. Hairline cracks up to 1/64" wide in the panels are normal. Lock the damper fully open before lighting, and don't close it until the embers are completely out.
How often does the chimney need cleaning?
Have it inspected at least twice a year while you are using the fireplace, and cleaned once creosote builds up to 1/8". Don't use the fireplace to cook or warm food.
Superior's 20 Year Limited Warranty covers the WRE4536 against defects in materials and workmanship:
Vent components, trim, paint and applied stains are not covered, and neither is damage from overfiring. Using chimney parts that aren't Superior's (IHP) voids the warranty. The warranty is for the original owner of a fireplace installed in the US or Canada. Full terms are in the warranty certificate.
