Superior VRE4660 60" Linear Outdoor Vent-Free Gas Fireplace With Electronic Ignition
The Superior VRE4660 is the 60" model in Superior's VRE4600 series of linear outdoor vent-free gas fireplaces. A 60" wide, 16" tall stainless steel firebox holds a row of flame over a bed of Diamond Crystal crushed glass, behind two glass windshields that keep the wind off the fire. Full-spectrum LED lights inside the firebox are tuned with color dimmers and run with or without the fire, and a wall-mounted control box handles the flame, the pilot and the lights.
It burns natural gas at 50,000 Btu/hr on high and 36,000 on low, with electronic ignition, and needs no chimney or vent pipe. It ships as a single-sided fireplace; Superior's LVOST60 kit turns it into a see-through. Propane needs the LPK3 conversion kit. A 120 volt GFCI outlet under the fireplace powers the ignition and the lights.
The VRE4600 also comes in 36", 48" and 72" (VRE4636, VRE4648, VRE4672). It is for outdoor spaces only, built into a frame of metal studs and cement board; see Installation Requirements.

Frame with metal studs only; wood studs are not allowed, and only non-combustible materials such as metal studs and cement board can touch the fireplace. Bend out the nailing flanges on the ends and fasten them to the studs, then hang cement board flush to the edge of the opening without reaching into it. The fireplace isn't load bearing, so the finish materials above it must be carried by the framing.
Installation Requirements
-
Outdoors only: the fireplace counts as outdoors with walls on all sides but no roof; under a roof with no more than two side walls; or under a roof with three side walls if at least 30% of the perimeter is permanently open. Never use it in a building, garage, camper, tent or other enclosed area.
-
Clearances to combustibles: a combustible wall at least 6" from the back of a single-sided fireplace, or 36" from a see-through one, and a combustible ceiling at least 46-1/2" above the top of the fireplace. Keep it well away from trees and landscaping.
-
Mantel: a combustible shelf up to 6" deep can be 18" above the top of the fireplace, and one up to 12" deep 24" above. The facing below must be non-combustible; combustible material is allowed above that. A see-through gets the same clearances on each side.
-
Base: set the fireplace on a flat, level, stable, non-combustible surface, or on one layer of 1/2" cement board laid under the whole fireplace over a flat combustible surface. Don't set it on grass, dirt or rocks, and never below grade. Plan for water to drain away from under the enclosure.
-
Cross ventilation: the enclosure needs at least 18 square inches of venting on each side to keep it dry. Mount the two supplied 6" x 12" stainless vents 3" to 4" above the floor, centered on each end (or one vent of at least 36 square inches). Leave the space under and around the valve box empty.
-
Gas: Superior recommends 3/4" black iron pipe, sized per NFPA 54 for longer runs, with a manual shutoff at the house wall. The supplied shutoff valve needs a 1/2" male flare fitting, and the supplied flexible line must be long enough to lift the burner pan out for service. Disconnect the fireplace during any pressure test of the gas line above 1/2 psi. Natural gas as shipped; convert to propane with the LPK3 kit before the burner pan goes in.
-
Propane: use a tank of at least 100 lb with a step-down regulator, and keep it outdoors, never inside any structure.
-
Power: install a 120 VAC GFCI outlet in a weatherproof box under the fireplace for the ignition and LED adapters, and run the power before the fireplace goes in. Mount the control box nearby (it comes with 10 feet of wiring). Install and test the LED lights before the finish goes on.
-
Media: use only Superior's 1/2" to 3/4" crushed glass, in the burner trough and pan only, no more than 1/2" over the burner tube and never over the ignition hole.
-
Windshields and hood: both glass windshields (all four on a see-through) and the stainless hood must be in place whenever the fireplace runs.
-
Elevation: set up for 0 to 4,500 feet. Above that, the input drops 4% per 1,000 feet, usually with a smaller orifice; your gas utility can help.
-
Weather: a weather cover protects it between uses; take off any combustible cover before lighting. After heavy rain or high humidity, light it and watch from a distance for at least 30 minutes while the media dries. Don't use it if any part has been under water.
-
Safety: never leave it unattended while it runs, and don't cook on it. Keep children away from the hot glass and surfaces.
-
Massachusetts: installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, following 527 CMR 30. The flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", the shutoff must be a T-handle valve, and a working smoke detector is required in the area where it is installed.
-
Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer, service agency or gas supplier following the manual and local codes. Superior calls for an inspection by a qualified service person before first use and at the start of each season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can it be see-through?
Yes. It ships single-sided. Removing the back panel and adding Superior's LVOST60 kit makes it a see-through with windshields on both sides. The framing is 15" deep instead of 16-1/4", and a combustible wall must be 36" away instead of 6".
Does it need electricity?
Yes. A 120 volt GFCI outlet under the fireplace powers the 7.5 volt ignition adapter and the 12 volt LED adapter, both included.
Natural gas or propane?
It ships for natural gas. Superior's LPK3 kit converts it to propane, and it should be installed by a qualified service agency, ideally before the burner pan goes in.
Can the lights run without the fire?
Yes. The LED lights have their own switch and color dimmers, so they work with the fireplace on or off.
Can I use a remote?
Yes. Superior's EF-BRCK remote and EF-WWRCK wireless wall switch, both listed above, turn it on and off and switch the flame between high and low. The control box can learn up to three of them.
What about rain?
Keep the weather cover on between uses and make sure water can drain from under the enclosure. After heavy rain, light it and let it burn for at least 30 minutes, from a distance, to dry the glass media.
