Superior LMF36GTA/B Mega-Flame Outdoor 36" Giant Timbers Logs, Concrete

The Superior LMF36GTA/B is a 36" Giant Timbers set of concrete logs for Superior's Mega-Flame Outdoor burner, a stainless steel chassis and grate built for outdoor fireplaces. Two cantilevered burners of bright yellow flame rise around 19" tall logs, and the burner can also be used indoors as a vented set in a wood-burning fireplace.

The logs ship in two boxes, LMF36GTA and LMF36GTB; order both, plus one MNF30 outdoor burner in millivolt or electronic control for natural gas or propane. Superior designs the 36" set for a 48" and larger firebox. On our store, the same style also comes as the 24" Giant Timbers Outdoor (LMF24GTA/B) and 30" Giant Timbers Outdoor (LMF30GTA/B); the 36" Mossy Oak Outdoor (LMF36MOA/B) fits the same burner; the 36" Giant Timbers (LMF36GTA/B) pairs with Superior's indoor vent-free burners.

Installation Requirements

  • Where it goes: outdoors in a site-built wood-burning fireplace, a UL127 wood-burning fireplace designed for outdoor use, or an unvented outdoor fireplace; indoors only as a vented set in a wood-burning fireplace with the flue damper open. Never in an unvented fireplace indoors.
  • Outdoor space: counts as outdoors with walls on all sides and no overhead cover, with a cover and no more than two side walls, or with a cover and three side walls if at least 30% of the perimeter stays permanently open. Not in windy or drafty spots or high-traffic areas, and never in an enclosed space such as a home, camper, tent or car.
  • Clearances: curtains, furniture and other flammables stay at least 36" from the front and 42" from the top; 16" to a side wall and 5" to the floor. Noncombustible material above the opening follows the same 12" rule, with the GA6050 hood between 8" and 12".
  • Indoor vented use: the flue damper stays permanently open with the GA6080 clamp, and the chimney and firebox are cleaned of soot, creosote, ashes and loose paint first. Not in a bedroom or bathroom unless vented (never in Massachusetts), and never in a recreational vehicle or a mobile home sleeping room.
  • MFEB flame bed: allowed only in a fireplace with a working vent or flue; not in an outdoor fireplace without one.
  • Logs: unpack both boxes and check every piece. Following the placement instructions, the right front log slides in against the lip of the black metal base, the grate and the round burner tube, then the back left log, front left log and charred log, the middle split log (split side forward) around the burner tube, the right split crossover log, and the front top and back top logs on the holes and pegs in the logs below. With the burner on high, no flame should touch any log.
  • Gas: the burner is built for natural gas or propane, not both. Propane tanks stay outdoors and must be at least 100 lb.
  • Running it: only with glass doors fully open and the fireplace screen in place, never with solid fuel, and never if the burner or controls have been under water. Expect possible pilot outages above 4,500 ft.
  • Massachusetts: installation and repair by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, a flexible connector no longer than 36" and a T-handle shutoff valve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two boxes?
The 36" Giant Timbers set is packed in two cartons, LMF36GTA (1 of 2) and LMF36GTB (2 of 2). Order both; together they're one complete set.

Which burner does it need?
One Superior MNF30 Mega-Flame Outdoor stainless burner. Superior pairs 24" and 30" logs with the MNF24 and 36" logs with the MNF30, each in millivolt or electronic control for natural gas or propane.

Can I use it indoors?
Only as a vented set in a wood-burning fireplace with the chimney damper held open by the GA6080 damper clamp. It can't go in an unvented fireplace indoors. For indoor vent-free use, Superior makes the same styles for its indoor Mega-Flame burners.

Which outdoor fireboxes fit it?
Superior designs the 36" set for a 48" and larger firebox. On our store, the VRE4550 and VRE6050 outdoor fireboxes take it; any firebox needs at least 47" at the front, 33" at the back, 28" of height and 15-1/2" of depth.

What is the MFEB?
The MFEB is a lava rock flame bed that adds glow at the base of the burner. Superior allows it only when the fireplace has a working vent or flue, so it's not for an outdoor fireplace without a chimney.

Which control should I pick?
The millivolt burner runs from its control knob and is remote ready for the RCKIT4001 remote and the GWMS2 wall switch. The electronic burner includes an RCAF3 remote with on/off and high/low flame.

Does it need electricity?
No. The millivolt burner runs off a standing pilot, and the electronic burner runs on four AA batteries in its battery pack (included) plus the remote's A23 battery. Neither connects to an outside electrical source.

What if the logs start to soot?
Soot means a flame is touching a log. Turn the logs off, let them cool and set each piece back exactly where the placement instructions show; with the burner on HI, no flame should touch any log. Don't add rocks or extra logs on the burner. If it still soots, have a qualified service technician check the burner's air openings.

How do I care for it outdoors?
Let it cool before touching it, keep the burner and control area clean, and have it inspected by a qualified service person before use and at least once a year. Don't run it if any log is broken or if any part has been under water; have a technician replace water-damaged controls first.

Warranty

Superior's Limited Three Year Warranty on gas log sets covers defects in materials and workmanship this way:

  • Logs and grate: 3 years
  • Gas components: 1 year, repair or replacement
  • Remote control: 1 year, repair or replacement
  • Parts not otherwise listed: 90 days
  • Labor: paid at IHP rates for the covered part's warranty period

Wear and tear, misuse, faulty installation and damage from burning wood or other solid fuel aren't covered. The warranty is for the original owner of a gas log set installed in the US or Canada. Full terms are in the MNF24 and MNF30 Outdoor Millivolt Burner Installation and Operation Manual.
