Superior LMF36MOA/B Mega-Flame 36" Mossy Oak Logs, Concrete

The Superior LMF36MOA/B is a 36" Mossy Oak set of concrete logs for Superior's Mega-Flame vent-free burner, sized for a 48" and larger firebox. The burner is a triple burner: two cantilevered burners of bright yellow flame rise around 19" tall logs, and a lower burner makes a glowing ember bed in front. The system is heater rated at 99% efficiency with a wood-burning grate look.

The logs ship in two boxes, LMF36MOA and LMF36MOB; order both, plus one MNF30 burner in millivolt, variable or electronic control for natural gas or propane. The set needs a firebox at least 47" wide at the front, 33" at the back and 28" high, and it's also listed for vented use with a damper clamp. On our store, the same style also comes as the 24" Mossy Oak (LMF24MOA/B) and 30" Mossy Oak (LMF30MOA/B); the 36" Giant Timbers (LMF36GTA/B) fits the same burner; the 36" Mossy Oak Outdoor (LMF36MOA/B) pairs with Superior's outdoor stainless burners.

Installation Requirements

  • Where it goes: a solid-fuel-burning masonry fireplace, a UL127 factory-built fireplace or a listed vent-free firebox. Not in a factory-built fireplace whose instructions say it hasn't been tested with, or shouldn't be used with, unvented gas logs.
  • Rooms: never in a bedroom, bathroom or recreational vehicle. Some state and local codes don't allow vent-free appliances at all, or allow only vented operation.
  • Room size: multiply the room's volume in cubic feet (plus any adjoining room open through a doorway without a door) by 20 to get the most Btu/h it can support, then add up every gas appliance in that space except direct-vent ones. At 40,000 Btu/h this burner alone needs about 2,000 cubic feet. If the total is higher, the space needs extra fresh air from an adjoining room or outdoors.
  • Chimney prep: before the burner goes into a wood-burning fireplace, have a qualified chimney cleaner clean the flue and firebox of soot, creosote, ashes and loose paint, and repair any damage. Permanently close outside air ducts and ash dumps, and seal fresh-air vents or ash clean-out doors in the firebox with heat-resistant sealant. Don't seal the chimney damper.
  • Above the opening: noncombustible material such as slate, marble or tile, at least 1/2" thick, must run at least 12" up from the opening. Between 8" and 12" needs the GA6050 hood; under 8" has to be extended or the logs run vented. A mantel needs at least 8" of noncombustible material below it, plus the hood if that's under 12".
  • Vented use: if the fireplace can't meet the vent-free clearances, local codes require venting, or you prefer it, the GA6080 clamp holds the chimney damper permanently open, leaving at least 39 sq in of flue opening on a 6 to 15 ft chimney or 29 sq in on a 15 to 30 ft chimney. In Massachusetts the damper has to be removed or welded fully open for vented use.
  • Logs: unpack both boxes and check every piece. Following the placement instructions, the back left log fits against the end of the burner tube, the charred log over the square grate against the burner tubes, then the right front and front left logs against the lip of the black metal base and the grate, the middle split log (split side forward) around the burner tube, the right split crossover log, the back top log on the pegs in the middle split and crossover logs, and the small left and right top logs last. With the burner on HI, no flame should touch any log.
  • Embers: the system comes with Platinum Bright Embers and Glowing Embers. Separate the Platinum Bright Embers and set them on the front flat burner just behind the horizontal ports, and place the Glowing Embers on the front flat burner away from the ports. Put ember material nowhere else and replace it only with Superior's. Volcanic stone and small decorative logs may go around the base, never on the front burner or the logs.
  • Running it: never burn wood or any other solid fuel in a fireplace with these logs installed, run them only with the fireplace screen in place and any glass doors fully open, and expect possible pilot outages above 4,500 ft.
  • Massachusetts: vent-free appliances can't go in bedrooms or bathrooms, installation and repair must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, the flexible gas connector can't be longer than 36", the shutoff must be a T-handle valve, and a working smoke detector is required where the logs are installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two boxes?
The 36" Mossy Oak set is packed in two cartons, LMF36MOA (1 of 2) and LMF36MOB (2 of 2). Order both; together they're one complete set, and neither box is meant to replace single logs.

Which burner does it need?
One Superior MNF30 Mega-Flame burner. Superior pairs 24" and 30" logs with the MNF24 and 36" logs with the MNF30, each in millivolt, variable or electronic control and natural gas or propane.

Which control should I pick?
The millivolt burner runs from its control knob and is remote ready for the RCKIT4001, TRC and TSRC remotes and the GWMT1 and GWMS2 wall controls. The variable burner includes a ProFlame remote with manual and thermostat modes and five flame heights. The electronic burner includes an EcoFlow touch screen remote with manual and thermostat modes and three flame heights.

Will it fit my fireplace?
Superior designs the 36" set for a 48" and larger firebox. It needs at least 47" of width at the front, 33" at the back (measured 15-1/2" in), 28" of height and 15-1/2" of depth, in a wood-burning masonry fireplace, a UL127 factory-built fireplace that allows unvented gas logs, or a listed vent-free firebox.

How big a room does it need?
Superior uses the National Fuel Gas Code method: the room's volume in cubic feet, counting adjoining rooms open through doorways without doors, times 20 is the most Btu/h the space can support. At 40,000 Btu/h the burner alone needs about 2,000 cubic feet, and any other gas appliance in the space that isn't direct-vent adds to the total. Smaller or very tightly built spaces need extra fresh air brought in.

Can I run it with the damper open?
Yes. The logs are also listed for vented use in a wood-burning fireplace. The GA6080 damper clamp holds the damper permanently open, leaving at least 39 sq in of flue opening on a 6 to 15 ft chimney or 29 sq in on a 15 to 30 ft chimney. Vented operation is required if the fireplace doesn't meet the vent-free clearances or local codes don't allow vent-free logs.

Will it heat during a power outage?
Yes. None of the burners needs house power: the millivolt and variable versions run off a standing pilot, and the electronic version runs on batteries in its power supply and remote. Superior says the logs can be your main heat source during an outage; the rest of the time they're meant as supplemental heat alongside your furnace.

Is a smell normal the first few times?
A slight smell or haze during the first fires comes from manufacturing residue and the logs curing, and it goes away. Odors later on usually come from things in the room air, such as cleaning products, paint or candles, mixing with the combustion air.

What if the logs start to soot?
Soot means a flame is touching a log. Turn the logs off, let them cool and set each piece back exactly where the placement instructions show; with the burner on HI, no flame should touch any log. Don't add rocks or extra logs on the burner. If it still soots, have a qualified service technician check the burner's air openings.

How do I care for it?
Turn it off and let it cool for at least 30 minutes first. Clean the burner, pilot and air inlet holes with a vacuum, a soft brush or compressed air under 30 psi about every three months while you're using it and before each heating season, and have it inspected by a qualified service person every year. Replace any log that's broken or chipped dime-size or larger, and put each one back exactly as the instructions show.

Warranty

Superior's Limited Three Year Warranty on gas log sets covers defects in materials and workmanship this way:
