Empire 42" Breckenridge Deluxe Vent-Free Firebox

A Vent-Free system uses room air for combustion and delivers 99.9% of the available heat energy directly to the room. Vent-Free systems have an unmatched safety record, thanks in part to their clean-burning technology and their Oxygen Depletion Sensor, which instantly shuts off the valve if oxygen in the room drops to and unsafe level. Because no venting is required, Vent-Free systems offer more installation options.

Vent-Free systems are limited to 40,000 Btu and must be operated as supplemental heating sources in conjunction with a central furnace that circulates air.

Breckenridge Vent-Free Fireboxes

The Breckenridge Vent-Free Fireboxes offer a variety of sizes and configurations. Available in louvered and flush front, the Breckenridge Deluxe and the deeper Premium models present the updated look of a traditional recirculating firebox.

Deluxe Firebox (VFD)

Designed for installation in tight spaces, Breckenridge Deluxe fireboxes measure just 16 1/2 inches deep for the 32-inch model and 19 for the 36-inch and 42-inch models, yet still allow installation of a blower. We offer an assortment of decorative arched doors, louvers, and frames for the Deluxe fireboxes – accessories normally reserved for manufacturers’ upscale models. Liners include four styles in ceramic fiber, one in refractory, plus Stainless Steel and Black Reflective (Deluxe only). This firebox is an elegant Matte Black. Surround your fireplace with a traditional-style Cabinet or Corner mantel in one of five finishes, or choose stainable oak or hardwood. For use with contemporary burners, we also offer stainless steel and reflective black liners to fit the Deluxe firebox, along with a special contemporary mantel in modern matte black  – in cabinet or corner models.

Installation Requirements

• Venting: Vent-free. No chimney, flue or vent pipe is required.
• Burner and log set: Sold separately. Install only an ANSI Z21.11.2 vent-free burner and log set (a listed gas-fired unvented decorative room heater) rated no more than 40,000 Btu/hr, and follow the log set's own installation instructions as well as this firebox's. The firebox manual does not name specific burner or log set models.
• Clearances to combustibles: Side and back flanges 0"; combustible finishing materials 3/4" from the top of the unit; 6" minimum from the inside of the firebox to a perpendicular combustible side wall; 36" clear in front of the firebox; ceiling at least 42" above the top of the hood
• Framing: Rough opening 35-3/4" H x 44-1/2" W x 18-3/4" D. Framing headers must be at least 3/4" above the fireplace.
• Mantel clearance: Follow the mantel chart in the installation manual for any combustible mantel above the unit.
• Floor: If the firebox sits directly on carpeting, tile or other combustible material other than wood flooring, install it on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the unit.
• Room size, bedrooms and bathrooms: The firebox manual sets no room-size rule of its own; follow the room-size and bedroom/bathroom rules in the installation manual of the vent-free burner/log set you install, and local codes. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, unvented propane and natural gas-fired space heaters are prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms.
• Power: Electrical connections (such as the optional blower) must be grounded per local codes or, where there are none, the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70. The three-prong grounding plug must go directly into a properly grounded three-prong receptacle.
• Installation: Must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes.
