A Vent-Free system uses room air for combustion and delivers 99.9% of the available heat energy directly to the room. Vent-Free systems have an unmatched safety record, thanks in part to their clean-burning technology and their Oxygen Depletion Sensor, which instantly shuts of the valve if oxygen in the room drops to an unsafe level. Because no venting is required, Vent-Free systems offer more installation options.

Vent-Free systems are limited to 40,000 Btu and must be operated as supplemental heating sources in conjunction with a central furnace that circulates air.

Vail Vent-Free Fireplaces

At 99.9 percent efficient, the Vent-Free Vail Fireplace delivers more heat for your energy dollars – 32,000 Btu for the Vail 32 and 36,000 Btu for the Vail 36.  Ceramic glazed pellets in the burner tumble and swirl the gas to produce a natural flickering flame.

The Vail 24 delivers the beauty of hand-painted ceramic fiber logs and natural flickering flames to dens, halls, and even bedrooms (10,000 Btu models only, where local codes allow).

The Vail 26 Special Edition is the American-made fireplace system that ships complete in one package, and is also offered as a separate fireplace – perfect for built-in and custom mantel applications.

Installation Requirements

• Clearances to combustibles: At least 4" from either side of the fireplace opening to a combustible side wall; at least 34-3/16" from the top of the fireplace opening to the ceiling. The fireplace can be installed with zero clearance to combustible material. If installed directly on carpeting, tile or other combustible material other than wood flooring, it must sit on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the appliance.
• Mantel clearance: Follow the mantel chart in the installation manual for any combustible mantel above the unit.
• Venting: Vent-free. No chimney, flue or vent pipe is required.
• Minimum room size: The room must have at least 50 cubic feet of volume per 1,000 Btu/hr of the combined input of all appliances drawing combustion air from it (the manual's "unconfined space" rule). At maximum input that is at least 1,000 cubic feet for the 20,000 Btu/hr models and 500 cubic feet for the 10,000 Btu/hr (L10) models.
• Bedrooms and bathrooms: The manual prohibits unvented room heaters rated over 10,000 Btu/hr in a bedroom or bathroom, and over 6,000 Btu/hr in a bathroom. Only the 10,000 Btu/hr models (VFP24FP70L10N/P) may go in a bedroom, subject to the room-size rule and local codes; the 20,000 Btu/hr models may not, and no model may go in a bathroom. In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, unvented propane and natural gas-fired space heaters are prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms.
• Local codes: Per the manual, state and local codes in some areas prohibit the use of unvented fireplaces. Always consult your local Building Department regarding regulations, codes or ordinances that apply to installing an unvented room heater.
• Gas input (BTU/hr): 20,000 Btu/hr models (VFP24FP70LN/P): natural gas and propane 20,000 max / 14,000 min. 10,000 Btu/hr models (VFP24FP70L10N/P): 10,000 max / 10,000 min.
• Power: Intermittent pilot control runs on an AC power adapter, with 4 AA batteries as backup.
• Installation: Must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes.
