Outdoor Electric Fireplaces

What makes an electric fireplace outdoor-rated

An electric fireplace can go outside only when its maker has rated that model for outdoor installation. Indoor-only electrics aren't built for it, so every fireplace in this collection carries an outdoor rating from Amantii, Remii, Modern Flames, Dimplex or SimpliFire. In every case that rating is for a covered space: under a roof, a patio cover or a porch, not open to the weather.

There's no gas line, chimney or vent pipe to plan. The work is the wall, the cover over it and the power at the fireplace.

Outdoor rules by brand

Modern Flames spells out the most detail for the Orion V2: the roof overhang and side protection have to reach at least half the fireplace's height, measured from its base, and the base sits at least 2" above the floor. Whatever the brand, follow the outdoor section of that model's installation manual before you build.

Power and heat

Most of these fireplaces run on a standard 120 V supply and draw about 1,500 W on high heat, which works out to roughly 5,000 Btu/h. Most also list a no-heat setting that draws well under 50 W, so the flame can run without the heater.

• Amantii and Remii: most models come with a power cord, 76" on many of them.
• Modern Flames Landscape Pro Slim: hardwired to a dedicated 120 V, 20 A circuit.
• Dimplex Ignite XL and Evolve: a dedicated 15 A circuit; at 120 V they can be hardwired, switched or corded, and at 240 V they're hardwired only and put out 2,500 W (8,530 Btu/h). Dimplex says the plug kit is not for use with an extension cord.
• Amantii Tru View Bespoke: can also be wired at 240 V for 3,000 W (10,236 Btu/h).

Settle the outlet or circuit with your electrician before the wall is closed in.

Built-in, three-sided or wall-mount

• Built in, recessed into the wall: Amantii Panorama and Symmetry, Remii Deep and Extra Slim, Modern Flames Orion V2 and Landscape Pro, Dimplex Ignite XL and Evolve, and the SimpliFire Forum.
• Three-sided, with glass on the front and both ends: Amantii Tru View and Cube, and Remii Bay Slim.
• Traditional firebox look: the Amantii TRD, built in or as an insert. For more log-set models, most of them indoor only, see Traditional Electric Fireplaces.
• Wall-mount: the Remii Wall Mount and Wall Mount Slim.

Outdoor Electric Fireplace FAQs

Can I put any electric fireplace outside?

No. Only models their maker rates for outdoor installation can go outside, and only in a covered space. Every fireplace in this collection carries that rating; indoor-only electrics aren't built for it.

Does an outdoor electric fireplace have to be covered?

Yes. Every model here is rated for covered outdoor installation, under a roof, patio cover or porch. Modern Flames also keeps the Orion V2 and Landscape Pro Slim out of direct water and direct sunlight, and Dimplex requires a shelter and says the fireplace can never be open to the weather.

Do outdoor electric fireplaces need a gas line or venting?

No. They plug in or are wired to an electrical circuit, with no gas line, chimney or vent pipe.

How much heat does an outdoor electric fireplace give off?

Most put out about 5,000 Btu/h on 120 V. The Dimplex Ignite XL and Evolve reach 8,530 Btu/h and the Amantii Tru View Bespoke 10,236 Btu/h when they're wired at 240 V.

Is the warranty different outdoors?

It can be. Dimplex covers the Ignite XL and Evolve for 5 years indoors and 1 year outdoors. Check the warranty section on each product page for the model you're choosing.

Can I use the same fireplace indoors?

Most of them, yes. The Amantii, Remii, Modern Flames and Dimplex models here are rated for indoor use as well as covered outdoor use. The SimpliFire Forum is built as an outdoor fireplace.
