Installation Requirements
-
Location: outdoor use only, installed in an outdoor fireplace or firebox. A screened porch is allowed if it has at least 96 sq ft of floor area, a ceiling at least 92" high, at least two screened walls with screens reaching at least 6'6" high on the side walls, and at least 64 sq ft of screen area.
-
Firebox: the fireplace or firebox must be at least 34 5/16" front width, 28" rear width, 15 9/16" deep, 24 3/16" high. If it has glass doors, use the door frame opening as the front width, and keep the doors open whenever the burner runs.
-
Mounting: center the burner so it clears the firebox screen, and anchor it to the firebox floor with the screws provided.
-
Moisture: the burner must sit where water drains off easily. Empire recommends a weather cover or bi-fold glass doors to protect it.
-
Gas line: the burner needs its own manual gas shutoff valve nearby (a T-handle valve in Massachusetts); a flexible connector can be no longer than 3 ft in Massachusetts.
-
Power: none; the ignition runs on its battery pack.
-
Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes. Empire states that its gas hearth products must be installed and serviced by NFI-certified gas specialists in the U.S. In Massachusetts the installation must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
