Empire Boulevard 48" Vent-Free Linear Gas Fireplace

The Empire Boulevard 48" vent-free gives a living room a 50" wide linear fire with no chimney and no vent pipe, in a firebox only 11" deep.

Pick millivolt control with an on/off remote (model numbers VFLB48FP30N and VFLB48FP30P), which runs without house power, or intermittent pilot with a thermostat remote (VFLB48FP90N and VFLB48FP90P). The barrier screen and non-combustible board come with it.

The Empire Boulevard 48" Vent-Free: A Wide Linear Fire Without the Vent

Up to 32,000 Btu/hr on natural gas or propane makes it a capable supplemental heater, and the millivolt version keeps working when the power goes out.

Because nothing has to reach the roof or an outside wall, it can go on an interior wall, under a TV or in a remodel where running a vent would mean tearing into the house. The room-size rule still applies: at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/hr, with adjoining rooms counted only when no door separates them.

Compare it with the 36", 60" and 72" in our Empire Boulevard linear gas fireplaces collection, or see all vent-free fireplaces.

Installation Requirements

  • Ceiling: at least 36" of clearance to the ceiling and to the top of the enclosure, measured as the manual shows.
  • Facing: the non-combustible board supplied with the fireplace must cover the area above and beside the opening as the manual shows (22 1/2" above for the clean-face finish, 20 1/2" for the flush finish).
  • Mantel: follow the mantel chart in the installation manual; a combustible mantel can project 2" at 18" above the fireplace opening, up to 12" at 28".
  • Floor: on carpet, tile or any combustible floor other than wood, set the fireplace on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit.
  • Room size: the room must be an unconfined space of at least 50 cubic feet per 1,000 Btu/hr of input (adjoining rooms count only if there is no door between them), or extra combustion air must be provided as the manual describes. With an input above 10,000 Btu/hr, it may not be installed in a bedroom or bathroom. Check local codes before you buy; some areas restrict vent-free appliances.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes.
  • Power: millivolt models run without house power; intermittent pilot models use the included AC adapter. The optional LK5 light needs a 120V supply, entering on the left side.

Make It Yours: Liners, Fronts and Media

Choose a black or white liner with matching burner cover, or a stainless steel liner, to set the look of the firebox.

The burner cover takes about 2.25 sq ft of crushed glass in clear frost, copper, bronze, blue clear or black polished, or you can use the 22-piece driftwood log set with rocks for a more traditional fire. Accent the edges with glacier ice droplets, onyx glass drops, rocks or pebbles, and finish the opening with a 3/4" or 1 1/2" matte black beveled frame.

FAQs

Do I need electricity for the Boulevard 48" vent-free?

The millivolt models (VFLB48FP30N/P) run without house power. The intermittent pilot models (VFLB48FP90N/P) use the included AC adapter, and the optional LK5 light needs a 120V supply.

How big does the room need to be?

Vent-free rules require at least 50 cubic feet of room volume per 1,000 Btu/hr of input. At 32,000 Btu/hr that is 1,600 cubic feet, counting adjoining rooms only when there is no door between them.

Can I switch from natural gas to propane later?

No. Field conversion is not permitted; order the model for your gas.

Can I put a TV or mantel above it?

Follow the mantel chart in the installation manual: a combustible mantel can project 2" at 18" above the opening, up to 12" at 28". The optional 48" heat transfer kit with the HMFA fan moves heat away from the wall above.
