Installation Requirements

  • Where it can go: into a code-compliant masonry or listed factory-built wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney; the chimney and firebox must be cleaned and inspected first. May go into a listed wood-burning fireplace in a permanently located manufactured (mobile) home where codes allow (US only).
  • Fireplace opening: at least 20 1/2" high x 30 1/2" wide x 17 1/2" deep (subtract the surround depth from the depth).
  • Venting: vertical co-linear venting only, through the existing chimney to its own cap in open air: 3" flex for the combustion air and 3" flex for the exhaust, aluminum or stainless, up to 40 ft. It cannot terminate horizontally, cannot share a cap with other flues and must never connect to a chimney serving another appliance.
  • Hearth and clearances: keep the original non-combustible hearth extension (at least 16" in front of the fireplace; no wood, vinyl or carpet directly in front). Keep the original clearances of a factory-built fireplace; on a masonry fireplace keep combustible mantels and trim projecting over 1 1/2" at least 12" above the opening, and projections under 1 1/2" at least 6" above it. Nothing combustible behind the surround or insert.
  • Surround and barrier: a surround supplied by Empire is required, and the barrier screen that comes with the insert must be installed.
  • Electrical: the 120 VAC cord can plug into a junction box in the fireplace or an outlet on the hearth; GFCI protection where code requires it.
  • High altitude: above 2,000 ft in the US the input may need to be reduced with a smaller orifice, generally 4% per 1,000 ft; confirm the orifice with Empire.
  • Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes. In Massachusetts the installation must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
