Dimplex Nova Acrylic Crystals Plug-In Electric Firebox

The Dimplex Nova Acrylic Crystals Plug-In Electric Firebox comes in four sizes — 23" (XHD23G), 26" (XHD26G), 28" (XHD28G) and 33" (XHD33G). It is designed to slide into a fireplace you already have: a masonry firebox that no longer draws, a decommissioned gas insert, or a mantel and surround built for the purpose. It plugs into an ordinary household outlet, so there is no venting, no gas line and no chimney work.

This version carries the acrylic crystal ember bed — faceted glass that scatters the light rather than absorbing it, giving a cooler and more contemporary fire than logs do. It is the right choice for a modern room, and it is the same firebox underneath as the Dimplex Nova Realogs version if you would rather have moulded logs. Identical dimensions, identical heater, identical controls — the media is the only difference.

Will It Fit? Minimum Fireplace Opening

This is the section that matters on an insert. You are not framing a new wall — you are fitting into an opening that already exists and cannot easily be changed. Measure yours before you order.

  23" XHD23G 26" XHD26G 28" XHD28G 33" XHD33G
Minimum opening width 21 1/2" 24 3/8" 27" 31 5/8"
Minimum opening height 20" 18 1/2" 23 1/8" 22 5/8"
Minimum opening depth 8" — all four sizes
Firebox size (W x H x D) 23" x 20 1/2" x 7 1/2" 26" x 18 7/8" x 7 1/2" 27 3/8" x 23 1/2" x 7 1/2" 33 1/8" x 23 1/4" x 7 1/2"
Packaged weight 29.5 lb 30 lb 36.5 lb 42.1 lb

Three things to check with a tape measure before you order.

  • Depth is the one that fails. Every size needs 8" of clear depth. The firebox itself is only 7 1/2" deep, but it needs that extra half inch — the manual requires a minimum 1/2" behind the unit. Shallow decorative surrounds and some prefab metal fireboxes will not give you 8".
  • The opening is narrower than the firebox. That is correct and intended — the surround flange overlaps the opening edge to hide it. Do not measure your opening and buy the firebox that matches it; buy the one whose minimum opening your fireplace exceeds.
  • The sizes are not in height order. The 26" is the shortest of the four at 18 1/2" minimum height, shorter than the 23". If your opening is wide but low, the 26" may fit where the 23" will not.

Electrical Requirements

Voltage 120 V, 60 Hz — no 240 V option
Power output 1,465 W — identical across all four sizes
Current draw 12.5 A
Circuit Dedicated, properly fused 15 A circuit
Connection Plug-in, standard household outlet
Heating coverage Up to 1,000 sq ft

It plugs in, but it still wants a circuit of its own. At 12.5 A this firebox uses most of a 15 A circuit on its own. Sharing that circuit with a television, a lamp and a games console is how people end up tripping a breaker every evening. If the outlet behind your fireplace is on a shared circuit, have an electrician confirm it before you install.

Note also that the heater is the same 1,465 W in all four sizes — a 33" Nova gives you a wider fire, not a warmer room. Dimplex publishes no BTU rating for this series; at 1,465 W the straight conversion is roughly 5,000 BTU/h, but we would rather give you the wattage Dimplex actually states than a number they do not.

Clearances

Minimum clearance behind the firebox 1/2" (13 mm)
Combustible materials in front Keep clear per the owner's manual

This is an indoor appliance. The owner's guide states "Do not use this firebox outdoors."
