The Dimplex Opti-Myst 86" Linear Electric Fireplace (model OLF86-AM, Dimplex order number X-136809) is the largest of the three Opti-Myst Linear sizes, and it does not imitate fire with light alone. It boils nothing and burns nothing — ultrasonic transducers atomise water into an ultra-fine mist, and multicolour LEDs light that mist from below. What rises off the log set is real, three-dimensional vapour that behaves like smoke, because it is behaving like smoke. Across more than seven feet of opening, the effect is the closest thing in the electric category to a genuine fire.
The flame itself produces no heat at all. The glass stays cool to the touch, and the flame effect and the heater are completely independent.
The 86" behaves differently from its two smaller siblings, and it is the one specification most listings for this model get wrong. Dimplex's technical sheet states it plainly:
"When connected to 120 V, there will be no heat output, but heat functions will be active on the controls with only fans operating."
In other words: wire this fireplace to a 120 V supply and you get the full water-vapour flame, the lights, the sound and a working-looking heat control — and no heat whatsoever. The heat button responds, the fans run, nothing warms up. If you want heat from an OLF86-AM, it must be wired to 240 V. If you only want the flame, 120 V is perfectly fine and you should know that going in.
This is also why the optional OLFPLUG cord kit, which is 120 V only, is not the right choice on this model unless you have decided to forgo heat entirely. Call us before your electrician roughs in — this is the single most expensive thing to get wrong on this fireplace.
This line needs two openings measured, and they are not the same number. The framing carries the appliance; the finished drywall opening is the smaller aperture your finish material returns to.
| Framing opening (W x H x D) | 88" x 31 3/4" x 12" (223.5 x 80.6 x 30.5 cm) |
| Finished drywall opening (W x H) | 86 3/16" x 17 1/2" (219.0 x 44.5 cm) |
| Appliance dimensions (W x H x D) | 87 1/2" x 31 1/2" x 11 7/8" (222.2 x 80.0 x 30.0 cm) |
| Viewing area (W x H) | 84 1/4" x 14 3/8" (213.8 x 36.3 cm) |
| Recommended mounting height, base above floor | 5" to 50" (13 to 127 cm) |
Note the depth: 12" of framing. This is a deep appliance — it carries a water reservoir, a mist chamber and a heater — so it will not go into a 2x4 wall. Plan a bump-out, a chase or a masonry surround. At 88" of framed width you should also confirm the header detail with your builder; this opening is wide enough to matter structurally.

The flame is made of water, so the unit needs a supply of it. There are two ways, and the decision has to be made before the wall closes:
Normal tap water is acceptable. In hard-water areas Dimplex recommends a water softener, and unfiltered water from a well or other unmonitored supply is not recommended. An in-line mesh filter is included, and an overflow sensor shuts the unit down if the level runs high.
This is the single most-missed requirement on the Opti-Myst Linear, and it is the one that causes warranty calls. The enclosure must be ventilated, and this model needs the most of the three:
| Minimum fresh air inlet area, OLF86-AM | 160 in² (1,032 cm²) |
| Openings beneath the unit | Required, for airflow to the underside |
Dimplex's guide is blunt about it: "Failure to include a fresh air inlet will result in poor flame performance and damage to the fireplace." 160 square inches is a genuine design constraint — roughly a 13" x 13" free area, and it has to be planned into the surround rather than found afterwards. If your design seals the appliance into an airtight cavity, it will not work properly and the damage will not be covered. Call us and we will work through the detail with your installer.
| Voltage | 120 V or 240 V — 240 V required for any heat |
| Rated input at 120 V | 1,020 W, 8.5 A — flame, lights and fans only, no heat output |
| Rated input at 240 V | 2,400 W, 10 A — heat available |
| Circuit | Dedicated, properly fused circuit |
| Connection | Hardwired. The OLFPLUG cord kit is 120 V only, so it forfeits heat on this model |
| Heat type | Fan-forced, thermostatically controlled, fully independent of the flame |
On BTU figures. Dimplex publishes no BTU rating for the Opti-Myst Linear, and we have chosen not to invent one by converting the wattage. This model is the clearest reason why: it draws 1,020 W at 120 V and produces no heat at all, so on this line the rated input is also running the ultrasonic transducers, the fans and the LEDs. Watts do not convert cleanly into delivered heat here. Treat the Opti-Myst as a supplemental heater bought for its flame, and size your primary heat separately.
This is an indoor appliance. Dimplex's installation guide states plainly: "Do not use this fireplace outdoors." Unlike the IgniteXL and Ignite Evolve lines, there is no covered-outdoor certification for Opti-Myst — the water system rules it out.
