Astound Built-in, FlexMount or SlimMount

Astound sizes and framing

The SlimMount's size in the name is its viewing width; the fireplace itself is 2" wider. Framing sizes are from Napoleon's installation manuals.

Wiring and heat

• Astound Built-in: must be hardwired by a qualified electrician, to a dedicated 15 amp grounded circuit. Wired at 120V it puts out 5,000 BTU (1,500 W); at 240V, 10,000 BTU (3,000 W). The cable comes in at the top right of the framed opening.
• Astound FlexMount: on the wall it plugs into a 120V outlet for 5,000 BTU. Partly or fully recessed it has to be hardwired, at 120V or at 240V for 10,000 BTU.
• Astound SlimMount: 120V only, 5,000 BTU (1,500 W). It plugs in when it's on the wall and is hardwired at 120V when it's recessed.

Each version has an ECO mode that runs the heater at half heat and a BOOST mode that runs it at full heat with a faster blower. Napoleon's instructions call for a dedicated 15 amp grounded circuit and rule out extension cords and power strips.

Installing an Astound

• Built-in: it goes fully into the wall and can't be hung. Frame the opening to the size in the table above; the framing isn't load-bearing, so allow for the weight of the finishing material. It's 0" to combustibles at the bottom, sides, back and top, and a mantel can sit 3-9/16" above the top of the fireplace. Finish it frameless with the finishing flange, or with the included 1-piece adjustable trim when the wall needs more coverage. Net weight runs from 132 lbs (50") to 227 lbs (96").
• FlexMount: hangs on a wall bracket, screwed into the studs where possible. Partly recessed, it sits in a 3-1/2" deep wall and sticks out from it. Fully recessed, it needs a 7-1/2" deep opening and uses the included edge panels and trim: closed on both ends (1-sided), open on one end (2-sided) or open on both ends in a bump-out (3-sided). Net weight is 74-1/2 lbs (50") to 103 lbs (74").
• SlimMount: hangs on a bracket fixed into a stud where there is one (drywall anchors where there isn't), or recesses into a standard 2x4 wall in an opening 17-1/2" high and at least 4" deep. It comes with a 1-piece trim and side cover panels; the side panels are used on the wall and left off when it's recessed.

Keep any Astound at least 36" from curtains, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials, in a spot that won't get damp. The FlexMount and SlimMount installation manuals give their own mantel clearances.

Flames, media and lights

• Spark effect flames in orange, yellow or both together.
• 13 ember bed and top light colors from the remote, with more combinations in the Napoleon Home app.
• The Built-in and FlexMount come with Beach Fire logs and a Woodland media kit. The Built-in's flip-down front glass makes it easy to change the media, or add seasonal decor.
• The SlimMount comes with a Woodland glass media kit.

Optional media for the Built-in and FlexMount:

• Birch log kit: small (BLKS) for the FlexMount 50" and 62", medium (BLKM) for the Built-in 50" and FlexMount 74", large (BLKL) for the Built-in 62", and extra large (BLKXL) for the Built-in 74" and 96".
• Mineral rocks in the same sizes (MRKS, MRKM, MRKL, MRKXL).
• Black crystal media and glass beads in amber, black, blue, clear or topaz.

For the SlimMount, glass embers come in amber, black, blue, clear, red or topaz.

Controls

Every Astound comes with a premium remote for on/off, the thermostat, flame, ember bed and top lights; on the FlexMount and SlimMount it also sets a 7-day schedule. The Napoleon Home app adds saved favorites, schedules and more flame and light combinations, and Google Home or Alexa can run select settings by voice. The optional wall mount controller (W370-0317) has a black or white faceplate, and Napoleon suggests it for commercial spaces.

Warranty

The Astound Built-in has Napoleon's 5-year registered warranty, and the FlexMount and SlimMount a 3-year registered warranty. It covers the fan and heaters, motors, switches, nylon bearing components, remote controls and LED lights. Light bulbs and fuses aren't covered.

Napoleon Astound FAQs

What is the difference between the Astound Built-in, FlexMount and SlimMount?

How it goes on the wall and how much heat it gives. The Built-in is recessed only, hardwired and up to 96" wide. The FlexMount can hang, partly recess or fully recess with open ends. Both reach 10,000 BTU on 240V. The SlimMount is 4" deep, hangs or recesses into a 2x4 wall and runs on 120V at 5,000 BTU.

Can I plug an Astound into a regular outlet?

The FlexMount and SlimMount plug into a 120V outlet when they're hung on the wall. Recessed, they have to be hardwired, and the Built-in is always hardwired.

How much heat does the Astound put out?

The Built-in and FlexMount put out 10,000 BTU (3,000 W) hardwired at 240V, and 5,000 BTU on 120V. The SlimMount puts out 5,000 BTU (1,500 W).

Will an Astound fit in a 2x4 wall?

The SlimMount will: it's 4" deep and recesses fully into a standard 2x4 wall. The FlexMount can sit partly recessed in a 3-1/2" deep wall, but it needs a 7-1/2" deep opening to recess fully, and the Built-in needs 13".

Can I change the logs or add my own decor?

Yes. Optional birch logs, mineral rocks, black crystals and glass beads fit the Built-in and FlexMount, and the Built-in's flip-down glass makes it easy to swap media or add seasonal decor.

Does the Astound work with Alexa or Google Home?

Yes, all three versions work with the Napoleon Home app and with Google Home and Alexa.
