Length is the only thing that really changes

This is the range's most practical feature and it is easy to miss. The 48", 60" and 72" are all 39-1/2 inches tall and about 13-3/8 inches deep, and the viewing window is 17 inches tall on every one of them. Going longer gives you more fire and more heat, not a taller or deeper appliance. In practice that means you can settle the length late, after the patio layout is drawn, without the mason or the framer redoing their numbers for height or depth. Very few fireplace ranges behave that way.

Thirteen inches deep is the number to notice

An appliance depth of roughly 13 inches is shallow for a fireplace this long. It fits inside a 2x6 framed chase or a block wall of modest thickness, which is what makes the Lanai workable on a patio wall, the side of an outdoor kitchen, or a freestanding feature wall that you do not want to be a foot and a half thick. Vent-free is the right answer outdoors

Indoors, vent-free provokes an argument. Outdoors there is nothing to argue about: there is no room to fill with combustion products and no flue to lose heat up. No chimney, no B-vent, no coaxial run, no termination to hide. That is why the Lanai can go on a patio wall that would never accommodate a direct vent fireplace, and why all of the output it produces ends up in the space you are sitting in. It also means the install is a gas line and a control wire rather than a venting project.

This is real heat, not a decorative flame

The 48" models run 55,000 BTU and everything above them — the 60", the 72" and the 60" see-through — runs 65,000. To put that in context, a lot of indoor direct vent gas fireplaces sit between 25,000 and 40,000. Outdoor heat disperses, so you need the extra output for it to be felt rather than merely seen, and this range has it. On an open patio in shoulder season a Lanai will genuinely extend the hours you can sit outside, which a low-output decorative burner will not. Note also that the 72" buys you twelve more inches of flame at the same 65,000 BTU as the 60" — it is a longer fire, not a hotter one.

See-through, and when it is worth it

The see-through models show flame from both faces, which suits a fireplace that sits between two zones — an outdoor kitchen and a lounge, a covered patio and open decking, a pool deck and a garden. If the fireplace sits against the house or a boundary wall, a single-sided model is the right choice and cheaper. The catch is structural: a see-through needs a wall you can see through, so it has to be a freestanding or peninsula structure designed for it, decided before the wall is built rather than after. Output is the deciding factor in neither direction: the see-through models carry exactly the same BTU as the single-sided models at both sizes, so going double-sided costs you nothing in heat.

Natural gas as standard, propane by conversion

Units ship configured for natural gas. If your property runs on propane you need the matching LP conversion kit, which is a specific part rather than a generic one — the see-through models take their own version. Order the kit with the fireplace rather than after it. Nothing is more frustrating than a finished feature wall waiting on a small orifice kit.

The drain pan and the screen barrier are not optional extras

These are the two accessories that decide how long an outdoor firebox lasts. The drain pan channels rainwater away from the firebox and its controls instead of letting it sit in the burner pan; in any climate with real weather it is the difference between an appliance that looks new in year five and one that does not. The framed screen barrier keeps leaves, needles and windblown debris out of the burner, which matters most under trees. If you are choosing between spending on media and spending on these, spend on these.

Then choose the look: media, trim and lighting

Crystal glass media comes in the box, and you can swap it for ceramic stones or a driftwood log set if you want the fireplace to read traditional rather than contemporary. The clean face trim kit finishes the appliance flush into the wall for a frameless look, and the crushed glass media is available separately if you want to change or top up the bed. All five models also carry LED lighting behind the flame in eight colours at three brightness levels, and it runs with the burner off — so the fireplace still does something on a summer evening when you do not want heat.

Covered or open sky changes what you buy around it

A Lanai under a covered lanai or pergola is a straightforward install and the drain pan matters less. In open sky, plan for water: the drain pan, a cover for the off-season, and a media choice you do not mind rinsing.
