Installation Requirements
-
Where it can go: only in a code-compliant masonry fireplace with a lined masonry chimney built for solid fuel. Do not remove bricks or mortar from the fireplace. Not approved for mobile homes, and the manual says it is not intended for a bedroom.
-
Masonry opening: at least 24" high, 29 1/2" wide and 19" deep (add about 4" of width if a fresh air kit is used).
-
Chimney liner: a continuous 6" stainless steel liner listed for solid fuel (UL 1777, Class 3) from the insert to the top of the chimney. The chimney must rise at least 3 ft above the roof where it passes through and 2 ft above anything within 10 ft. Do not connect to a flue serving another appliance.
-
Floor protection: non-combustible floor protection at least 16" in front of the door opening and 8" to the sides (US) when the hearth is at least 5" above the combustible floor; with a lower hearth it needs an R-value of at least 1.00 and must extend 23" in front. The depth of the existing hearth counts toward it.
-
Clearances: side walls, combustible surround, mantel and mantel shelf clearances are in the masonry opening and clearances table of the installation manual.
-
Fire screen: Empire states that in the United States, and anywhere a particulate emission limit is enforced, this EPA-certified appliance may not be operated with the door open and a fire screen in place. Burn with the door closed.
-
Installation: must be installed by a qualified installer per the installation manual and local codes; check with your local building official for permits and inspection.
